Madrid volleyball goes 2-3 at tournament

The Madrid volleyball team finished the day with a 2-3 record at the West Central Tournament Saturday, August 30.

The Madrid volleyball team finished the day with a 2-3 record at the West Central Tournament Saturday, August 30. 

Tripoli 2, Madrid 0 

Madrid opened the tournament against Tripoli, falling in straight sets. 

Despite the loss, the Tigers were sharp at the service line, going 19-for-20.  

Iyla Fine and Rylin Velky each recorded 2 assists, while Paige Richards led the defense with 5 digs.  

Caia Byriel added an ace serve. 

Madrid 2, Valley Lutheran 0 

Madrid bounced back with a strong performance against Valley Lutheran.  

Fine tallied 2 kills, and Velky dished out 3 assists.  

Jaela Hansen was a force at the service line, going 16-for-18 with 4 aces.  

Richards added a dig in the win. 

West Central 2, Madrid 1 

In a tightly contested match, Madrid pushed West Central to three sets.  

Velky had 7 assists, while Fine led the attack with 6 kills.  

Lauren Dvorak and Samantha Springer each recorded a block.  

Byriel and Richards anchored the defense with 8 digs apiece, and Velky added 4 aces on 12-for-14 serving. 

Madrid 2, Colo-Nesco 0 

Madrid earned its second win of the day with a sweep of Colo-Nesco.  

Velky continued her strong play with 14 assists, and Fine dominated at the net with 9 kills.  

Both players also had 3 digs.  

Fine and Hansen each served up 4 aces. 

Postville 2, Madrid 1 

In their final match, the Tigers battled hard but came up short in three sets against Postville.  

Fine and Velky each had 7 assists.  

Springer led the offense with 6 kills, followed by Dvorak with 5 and Fine with 4.  

Richards was a defensive standout with 21 digs, while Byriel added 2 blocks and 4 aces. 

Madrid now sits at 2-4 on the season and will look to build momentum as they travel to face Panorama (0-3) at 7:30 tonight.
