The Boone girls’ wrestling team took to the mats at the state tournament Friday, February 6, at Xtreme Arena in Coralville with Poppy Malone finishing in 6th place and Cadence Heggen ending in 8th.
In consolation round 3, Malone at 105 (28-9) pinned Taylor Cavanh of Iowa City Liberty in just 3:24.
In the consolation semifinals, she faced Serenity Turner of Knoxville, who won by fall at :51, sending Malone into the fifth-place match.
Malone battled London Vermillion of Southeast Polk, but Vermillion managed the fall at 2:43.
Malone’s efforts secured a 6th-place state medal.
Heggen at 190 (29-13) also competed in the consolation rounds on Friday.
In consolation round 3, Heggen faced Sophie Reed of Southeast Polk, and Reed won by fall at 4:16.
That result placed Heggen into the 7th-place match, where she met Serenity Malone of Cedar Rapids Washington.
Malone won by fall in 3:37, and Heggen’s efforts earned her an 8th-place state medal.
2025-26 season recap
In addition to Malone and Heggen, Emersyn Zehner at 135 was region champ and also qualified for state, earning a consolation victory before her run ended.
Abigail Molitor at 140 won the Colfax-Mingo tournament in January, and Boone beat Ogden, 34-33, in early January to win the Rumble for the River.
At its home tournament in late December, Malone and Heggen were champions.
Additionally, Heggen and Brooklyn Elliot at 235 won titles at the Woodward-Granger tournament in early December.
