BOONE, Iowa—With city offices closed on Monday, Sept. 1, Mayor Elijah Stines issued the following message in recognition of the Labor Day holiday:
“Labor Day was established as a federal holiday in 1894 to celebrate the economic and social achievements of America’s workers. Countless men and women gave their very lives in the struggle for workplace protections, fair wages, and the abolition of child labor in our nation. We can never adequately thank them for their sacrifices.
This holiday also gives us an opportunity to reflect on the considerable contributions of today’s workers, including those public servants with the City of Boone.
“As the mayor of our community, I see firsthand the outstanding commitment to service that the individuals in every department demonstrate each day of the year. Many of those men and women work nights, weekends and holidays to keep us safe and respond to emergencies under the most difficult circumstances.
“The contributions of every city employee to our well-being remind me of the words of one of history’s most inspiring leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It was Dr. King who said, ‘All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity.’
“The labor of our city employees uplifts our community as they serve us with dignity, compassion, care and professionalism. I am proud of our city’s employees, and their dedication is a welcome source of pride for every Boone citizen. Our community is a better place because of the efforts of Boone’s municipal employees.
“I extend my appreciation to them and wish them and everyone in our community all the best on this Labor Day holiday.”
