No. 7 Madrid rolls to homecoming victory over BGM

Homecoming was a successful one for the seventh-ranked Madrid football team on Friday, September 11, as the Tigers stayed unbeaten with a 26-6 victory over Brooklyn-Guernsey-Malcom (BGM).

Homecoming was a successful one for the seventh-ranked Madrid football team on Friday, September 11, as the Tigers stayed unbeaten with a 26-6 victory over Brooklyn-Guernsey-Malcom (BGM). 

Madrid controlled the game from the opening quarter, building a 14-0 halftime lead before scoring 12 more points in the third quarter.  

Madrid struck first with 3:23 remaining in the opening quarter when Will Atkinson capped a drive with a 10-yard touchdown run.  

The extra point attempt was unsuccessful, but the Tigers held a 6-0 advantage. 

The lead grew late in the first quarter when Jevyn Severson broke free for a 25-yard touchdown run with 1:25 remaining.  

Severson then connected with Emerson Bridgewater on the two-point conversion to give Madrid a 14-0 lead that held through halftime. 

With 9:22 left in the third quarter, Severson powered into the end zone from two yards out for his second rushing touchdown of the night.  

The PAT attempt failed, but Madrid led 20-0. 

Later in the quarter, Kole Deppe, who stepped in at quarterback because of an injury, raced 42 yards for a touchdown with just two seconds remaining in the third period.  

The PAT was no good, extending the Madrid advantage to 26-0. 

BGM avoided the shutout when it scored with 8:28 remaining in the fourth quarter.  

The extra point attempt was unsuccessful, making the final score 26-6. 

Madrid’s offense was powered by a dominant rushing attack that piled up nearly 300 yards on the ground.  

Severson led the way with 145 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries.  

Atkinson added 69 yards and a touchdown on 17 attempts, while Deppe rushed 15 times for 69 yards and a score.  

Chase Perkins chipped in with a 16-yard carry. 

Severson was efficient through the air, completing both of his pass attempts for 47 yards. 

Deppe added a completion for 25 yards.  

Bridgewater hauled in two catches for 46 yards, while Max Fowler added a 26-yard reception. 

Madrid’s defense was equally impressive, limiting BGM to just one late touchdown. 

Atkinson led the Tigers with 7.5 tackles and two tackles for loss.  

Quinten Moore recorded five tackles, two tackles for loss and recovered a fumble. 

Severson contributed five tackles and three tackles for loss. 

Fowler added 3.5 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss, while Mason Moorman finished with 2.5 tackles and a tackle for loss.  

Bridgewater registered three tackles, and Logan Bogardus came away with an interception to highlight another strong defensive effort. 

The Tigers improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in district play, while BGM fell to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the district. 

Madrid will look to remain unbeaten when it travels to Earlham on Friday, September 18. 

The Cardinals enter the matchup with a 1-2 overall record and are 0-1 in district play.
