The No. 9-ranked Madrid Tigers combined a suffocating defense with a relentless ground attack to shut out North Mahaska, 50-0, Friday, September 5.

The Tigers scored early and often, improving to 1-1 on the season.

The tone was set in the first quarter when Loken Velky broke free for a 67-yard touchdown run, giving Madrid a 7-0 lead with 8:20 left.

Five minutes later, Will Atkinson added a 36-yard score to make it 14-0.

In the second quarter, Velky connected with Jevyn Severson for a 30-yard touchdown pass, followed by a 13-yard touchdown run from Easton Halverson, pushing the lead to 27-0 at halftime.

Madrid didn’t slow down after the break.

Velky ripped off a 50-yard touchdown run to open the third quarter, and a safety shortly after extended the lead to 37-0.

On the next drive, Atkinson added his second touchdown of the night with a 10-yard run.

Colby Owens took over quarterback duties in the fourth quarter and capped the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run.

Velky finished with 182 rushing yards and two touchdowns, adding a 30-yard touchdown pass on his lone completion.

Atkinson tallied 103 yards and two scores on 10 carries, while Halverson exploded for 94 yards on just two attempts.

Severson’s only catch was the 30-yard touchdown.

Madrid’s defense was equally impressive, led by Easton Halverson with 5.5 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks.

Max Fowler added 4.5 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, and a sack.

Brady Springer contributed 4 tackles, 2 for loss, and a sack.

Atkinson and Mason Moorman chipped in with 4 and 3 tackles, respectively.

The Tigers will travel to face Brooklyn-Guernsey-Malcolm (2-0) Friday, September 12 in a district matchup.
