Ron Sorber

KWBG 02/21/23

BOONE, Iowa—Ronald Sorber, age 80 of Boone, passed away on Monday, February 20, 2023 at the Boone County Hospital.

Ronald Leroy Sorber was born on April 4, 1942 in Boone, the son of Donald B. and Laura Nell (Larson) Sorber. Following graduation from Boone High School in 1960, Ron enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was proud of the USS Independence that he served on through the Cuban Missile Crisis in the Gulf. He was honorably discharged from the USN in 1963. Ron returned home to Boone and attended Boone Junior College.

On November 23, 1963, Ron was united in marriage with Judith Audrey Shuster at Sacred Heart Church in Boone. They were blessed with four children, Joseph, Angela, Michael and Matthew.

Ron was a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service in Boone from the early 1980s until his retirement in 2004. Many postal service workers referred to him as a legend due to his practical jokes.

Ron loved anything outdoors. He loved his morning routine of feeding his critters peanuts; Ron had names for the squirrels and watched them until they ran off with bellies full. Ron enjoyed woodworking and camping, many years hosting camp outings at Spring Lake. Ron’s greatest joy was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Joe and Olive Shuster; sister and brother-in-law, Pam and Denny Maland; and brother-in-law, Don Ivis. He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Judy; sons, Joe Sorber of Boone, Mike (Joanna) Sorber of Jefferson and Matt (Dawn) Sorber of Boone; daughter, Angie (Marty) Paris of Austin, MN; grandchildren, Emily (Adam) Dudley, Mitchell Sorber, Nick (Maggie) Paris, Nate Paris (Bridget), Mallory Sorber (Darin), Mollie Sorber (TJ), Abby Sorber and Allison Sorber; step-grandchildren, Ashley (Jamie), Cody, Austin and  Kassadi; great-grandchildren, Cayden, Conner and Caley Dudley, Fallon and Jovie Paris and Carter Sorber; along with several nieces and nephews.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone. Visitation will be held one hour prior. Burial will be at a later date in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the family for later designation.

Online condolences may be left at www.schroedermemorialchapel.com.

Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets is in charge of arrangements.
