Sherryl Dighton

KWBG 11/11/25

BOONE, Iowa—Sherryl Ann (Ellingson) Dighton, age 84, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2025, at the Israel Hospice house in Ames, IA.

Sherryl was born on September 2, 1941, in Hampton, IA, to Donald and Alice (Akers) Ellingson. She grew up on her family farm with her brother and sister and attended school in Popejoy, IA. Upon high school graduation, she attended the State College of Iowa (UNI) and graduated with a degree in Education. She met the love of her life, Lyndon Dighton, while in college. They were married within a year of meeting on December 28, 1963, in Popejoy, and moved to Hawarden, IA, to start their teaching careers. While there, they welcomed their daughter, Sally. Sherryl and Lyn moved to Boone in 1968 to their forever home on First Street. There, they welcomed Dan and Jeff to the family. They were married for 60 years.

Sherryl was able to be a stay-at-home mother and returned to teaching when Jeff entered 3rd grade. She taught 4th grade for the Boone Community School District for 24 years. She impacted many students and teachers’ lives with her smile, humor, love, and steady hand. She was often called upon to help the most challenging students.

Sherryl was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, Martha Circle, TTT Chapter GL, and was a membership chair for FUMC. She also served on numerous church committees, Little League Board, and the Boone Booster Club Board. She enjoyed her coffee groups and playing bridge with her friends. You could often find her puttering in her yard and garden.

She was a constant cheerleader in the stands for her children and then her grandchildren. She absolutely loved being a mom, grandma, and great-grandma (GG). Her family was everything, and getting everybody together brought her such joy.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Lyndon, infant daughter, Sherri Lynn, her parents, and sister, Diane Guerttman.

She is survived by her daughter, Sally (Ian) Overland; sons, Dan (Sally) Dighton and Jeff (Ammie) Dighton; grandchildren: Jordan (Koby) Pritchard, Mitch (Lauren) Overland, Carrie (Alex) Fox, Ben Dighton, Ryan (Katie) Dighton, Emma Dighton, Paige Dighton, Carter Dighton, and Phoebie Dighton; great-grandchildren: Gavyn Pritchard, Finley Pritchard, Daisy Pritchard, Charlotte Overland, Archer Overland, and Jace Dighton; brother, Max Ellingson; and loved brother and sister-in-law’s; nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at the First United Methodist Church in Boone, with Pastor Adam Gordon officiating. Interment will be at Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone following the funeral service. Visitation with the family present to greet friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 17, 2025, at Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home in Boone. Visitation will resume Tuesday morning from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church.

Memories are suggested to the family to use at their discretion.

Previous: Diane Hinderaker, Executive Director, Boone Greene County Probation talks about challenges the agency faces with a change in direction for probation. The service has been available in Boone County for 40-years, as a way to allow those placed on probation as a way to meet obligations. Those are cases that aren’t handled at the state level. There are fee’s associated with the service and for a variety of reasons those fee’s are declining which means the non-profit service faces funding issues. Hinderaker talks about that and more. Aired Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
