Theodore “Ted” Welch, Sr., 79, Marshalltown, Iowa
MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa—Theodore “Ted” Hugh Welch, Sr., was called home by the Lord Jesus in the early morning hours of Saturday, September 19, 2026 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
He was born in Mason City, Iowa on January 12, 1947 to Frank and Juanita Welch. From 1949 on, he was raised in Boone, Iowa.
After graduating high school in 1965, Ted enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served in the Air Police and other duties until 1970. It was during this time, in the summer of 1968, that Ted was born again and saved by the Lord Jesus Christ.
After his discharge, Ted attended Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri. There he earned a Graduate of Theology degree and then in 1979 was ordained into Pastoral Ministry, serving the Kingdom of God in various churches for the sake of the Gospel until he retired from Pastoral Ministry in 2017.
Ted enjoyed fishing with his kids, photography, collecting antiques, and using his snow blower. He will be remembered for his fearless evangelism, patience, gentleness, and love for Oreo cookies and fried chicken.
Ted was preceded in death by parents, Frank Welch and Juanita Welch; sister, Joan (Sheldon) Perkins, and son, Theodore Welch Jr.; as well as grandchildren, Stephanie Welch, Michael Garvey, Breeanne Garvey, and Brett Thomas; and great-grandson, Thomas Welch.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Welch; son, Matthew Welch; daughter, Heather Kern; and step-sons, Ronald (Joanne) Garvey, Jeffery (Tami) Garvey, and Thomas (Teresa) Whiteman; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A Graveside service will be held Monday, September 28, 2026 at 11:00 AM in Sparks Cemetery, 1259 265th Lane, Boone, with Rev. Tom Whiteman officiating. A Celebration of Life is being planned for the Spring of 2027.
