AMES, Iowa—Funeral arrangements have been set for 65 year old Thomas Leo Fitzgerald of Ames, Iowa and formerly of Boone, Iowa. He passed away Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at his home.
Tom was born on November 27, 1955, the son of Leo and Marjorie (Tilley) Fitzgerald in Boone, Iowa. Tom attended Sacred Heart School in Boone until 8th grade then graduated from Boone High School in 1974.
Tom was united in marriage with MarJean Stephens on August 8, 1974 at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone. From this union were two children, Stacy and Nick.
Tom managed L & M Gas & Grocery in Boone for his parents for many years, then moved to Topeka, KS for 6 years where he managed a Dick’s Sporting Goods. In 2007, Tom moved back to Ames, IA. After some health complications in 2020, Tom retired.
Tom was an avid baseball fan. Tom coached his son’s little league teams for many years and also coached his son’s All-Star team which made it to the state tournament one year. He enjoyed fishing, especially at Little Boy Lake in MN, Lost Island Lake, and Saylorville, where he also enjoyed boating and skiing with his family. Tom was a huge Hawkeye fan! He sold roses when the Hawks went to the Rose Bowl.
Tom was preceded in death by his father; stepfather, Clarence “Clancy” Dixson; brother-in-law, John Ahrens. He is survived by his mother, Marge Dixson of Boone; mother of his children, MarJean; children, Stacy (Jason) Blomgren of Waukee and Nick Fitzgerald (fiancé, Laurie) of Ogden; grandchildren, Meagan, Mackenzie, Jacob, Molly and Macy Blomgren and Autumn Roum; brother, Michael (Tami) Fitzgerald; sisters, Cheryl Ahrens, Denise Fitzgerald and Diane (Joe) Davis.
Visitation will be held from 5:30 until 7:30 P.M. on Monday, October 18, 2021 at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets. A Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Boone.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Thomas’ Family.
