BOONE, Iowa—Tom Petersen, age 79 formerly of Boone, passed away on Monday, March 20, 2023 at the Grandview Care Center in Dayton.
Born Thomas Oakley Petersen on February 20, 1944 in Boone, the son of Earl Oakley and Nanna J. (McCaskey) Petersen. Tom was raised by his grandparents, Jack and Opal McCaskey. He graduated from Boone High School in 1962.
Tom was united in marriage with Jan Carroll in 1964. From this union were two children, Jon and Angela. They later divorced.
Tom was united in marriage with Muriel “Murt” Newland McDowell on September 21, 2007. Murt passed away on December 11, 2009.
Tom was an avid bowler most of his life and traveled many places to compete in bowling tournaments. Tom loved his cars and motorcycles; He spent considerable time tending to them to always keep them looking sharp and clean.
Tom was an employee of the Chicago Northwestern and Union Pacific Railroad until his retirement.
Tom was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents; and his wife, Murt Petersen. He is survived by his children, Jon (Vicki) Petersen of Norwalk and Angela (Shawn) Dose of Sioux Falls, SD; step-children, Chad (Rachel) McDowell and Brian (Monica) McDowell; grandchildren, Kyle Dose, Kenedy Dose and Austin Petersen; and great-grandchild, Landyn Dose.
Per Tom’s wishes, cremation has taken place and private services will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.
