BOONE, Iowa—Monday, the United School Board and the Madrid School Board, took action to begin negotiations for a new whole grade sharing agreement. The United School Board held an early meeting Monday, while the Madrid School Board took action during their regular meeting Monday afternoon. The United School District followed up with a press release:
The United Community School District Board of Education has selected Madrid Community Schools as its preferred partner for a potential whole-grade sharing agreement.
The proposed agreement has not yet been finalized. Negotiations for a partnership will take place over the next several months, with plans to begin during the 2027-28 school year.
“This decision followed a months-long review of potential whole-grade sharing partners,” said Superintendent Heather Holm. “Our board considered several factors, including student achievement data, graduation rates, class sizes, student-to-adult ratios, school calendars, start times, travel distances, student safety, and community survey results.”
Based on its review, the board identified Madrid as its preferred partner, citing the district’s academic performance, small class sizes, willingness to coordinate school calendars and start times, and considerations related to student safety.
During the negotiation process, the two districts will work through several important details, including funding, transportation, school calendar and start-time coordination, and other arrangements necessary to implement a potential partnership.
“Our priority remains providing strong educational opportunities in a safe, supportive environment for United students,” said Holm. “We appreciate the continued involvement of our students, families, staff, and community members as we plan for our students’ future.”
Before a final agreement is approved, a public hearing will be held to provide community members with an opportunity to share comments. The United Community School District will continue to provide updates as negotiations progress and additional information becomes available.
