BOONE, Iowa—Former Governor and Former USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack hosted a forum Thursday morning at the Ericson Public Library. Vilsack spoke about his forward vision concerning the many issues facing Iowa farmers and how those issues affect rural communities. He spoke about the farm numbers and the amount of land no longer in production just since the 1980’s. Vilsack said these are issues that need to be talked about and addressed during the next election cycle, especially since Governor Reynolds has decided not to seek re-election.
The event in Boone was part of a series focused on how Democrats plan to help “Grow Iowa” through building a stronger economy and attracting more people to the state. Vilsack said population growth in Iowa is up 11% since the 1980 census, lagging well behind neighboring states except for Illinois.
