W. Dean Carlson

BOONE, Iowa—With profound sadness, we announce the passing of W. Dean Carlson, devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. On April 19, 2022, at the age of 92 years, he passed away peacefully with his children by his side.

On November 30, 1929, Dean was born in Boone, Iowa to his parents, Reuben and Dorothy Carlson. Dean met is wife Helen while at a 4-H roller skating party. On November 2, 1952, they were married at the First Presbyterian Church in Boone. They resided on the Carlson family farm until the passing of his beloved wife of 68 years.

Dean was a Mackey United Methodist Church member and serviced as the township trustee for many years. He loved displaying his Christmas lights, and on the 4th of July, he enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends to watch his fireworks. Dean was also fond of ballroom dancing (especially when his children could come) and playing the piano. He appreciated gardening, model railroading, bird watching, and stamp collecting in his younger years.

Dean had a strong, direct, and decisive personality with a deep love for his wife and family.

He is the father of Richard (Sharon) Carlson, Terry (Bill) Wilson, and Reuben (Jan) Carlson. He is the grandfather of Sarah (Jeff), Matthew (Kelly), Hannah (Alex), Rebekah (Matthew), Michelle (Jason), John, Eric, Joshua, Joseph, and Daniel. He is also great-grandfather to Maria, Ana, Matthew, Jonathan, Ila, Violet, Hadley Harper, Mya, Addi, Bristol, Noah, and Madelyn.

He is preceded in death by his wife Helen, his infant son Scott Allen and his parents, Reuben and Dorothy Carlson. He will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.

Visitation with the family present to greet friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 24, 2022 at Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home. A private family funeral service will be held at a later date. Burial will be at Mackey Cemetery in Boone County.

Memorials are suggested to the Boone Area Humane Society or the Mackey Community Preservation Fund and can be sent to C/O Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home, P.O. Box 116, Boone, IA  50036.
