BOONE, Iowa—Shirley Shuey, age 89 of Boone and the Westhaven Community, passed away on Sunday, February 26, 2023.
Born Shirley LaVonne Merrill on June 21, 1933 in Fort Dodge, the oldest of 9 children of Herbert R. and Ruth (Scott) Merrill. She graduated from Stratford High in 1951.
On October 28, 1951, Shirley was united in marriage with Donald Edmund Shuey in Stratford. The couple lived in England for 3 years while Don was stationed there for the Air Force. Don and Shirley were blessed with 2 daughters, Colleen and Patricia.
Shirley worked for Iowa Electric from 1977 until retiring in 1992.
Shirley and Don loved wintering in Donna, Texas for 21 years, taking bus trips to Las Vegas, New Orleans and casinos. They often took ‘spur of the moment’ trips and traveled wherever the car would take them. Shirley enjoyed reading, knitting, sewing, camping and playing cards.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don in 2019; grandsons, Travis Duehring and Todd Eslick; and brothers, Ron and Jerry Merrill. She is survived by her daughters, Colleen (Richard) Eslick of Dayton and Pat (Marlin) Duehring of Boone; grandsons, Bradley (Mary) Eslick of Dayton, Ryan (Lindsay) Eslick of Lehigh and Curtis (Shelby) Duehring of Boone; great-grandsons, Daniel (Dre), Nicholas, Michael, Nolan, Corbin and Ryker Eslick and Austin Duehring; great-granddaughters, Lauren and Avery Eslick; brothers, Cleon (Jan) Merrill, Denny (Carol) Merrill, Dale (Darlene) Merrill and David (Joyce) Merrill; and sisters, Shannon (Jim) Leuck and Kathleen Kennedy; along with many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets. A private family burial will be held at Linwood Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the family for later designation.
