BOONE, Iowa—The Boone County Board of Supervisors, in a split decision, voted to keep the former Boone County Home property, located north of Boone on Nature Road. Instead, during a series of motions, the Board voted to commission and pay for a memorial to be located at the County Home Cemetery. Supervisor Erich Kretzinger, followed with motions to retain ownership of the property and refer to it as the Jack and Ilah Long Memorial Park until such time as the Board of Supervisors vote to change the name; develop an agreement between the county and the Dodge Township Trustees for the management and operating costs of the park, which will be developed with the help of County Attorney Matt Speers; and due to liability, all current activities cease on the grounds until users are able to secure written approval from the Supervisors and include appropriate liability insurance that includes coverage for the county. Securing written permission is new but the county already requires additional coverage of liability for many events on county property. Kretzinger said having a written record will make it easier in the future to address any concerns that arise. Supervisor Bill Zinnel opposed all the motions except the memorial at the cemetery.
