Malone, Heggen are champions at Boone Invite

The Boone girls’ wrestling team crowned 2 champions at the Boone Invitational Saturday, Dec. 21. 

Poppy Malone placed 1st at 105 pounds, and Cadence Heggen placed 1st at 190 pounds. 

Malone received a bye in the quarterfinals. She won by technical fall over Olivya Mack of East Sac County, 17-0, in the semifinals. In the 1st place match, Heggen pinned Aubrey Shannon of Gilbert in 3:05. 

Heggen also received a bye in the quarterfinals. She pinned Meke Kuipers of East Sac County in 1:27 in the semifinals. In the 1st place match, Heggen pinned Olivia Wise of Marshalltown in 1:25. 

At 140 pounds, Emersyn Zehner placed 3rd. In her first round, she pinned Brianne Pitcherello of Nevada in :55. In the quarterfinal round, she was pinned by Addyson Lovelace of Marshalltown in 1:03. In the consolation rounds, she pinned Emma Westfall of Boone in 1:05, pinned Samantha Aljets of Ames in 2:30 and pinned Rachel Jones of Manson-Northwest Webster in 1:22. In the 3rd place match, Zehner won by major decision over Lovelace, 15-7. 

At 155 pounds, Phoenix Horvath placed 4th. In the quarterfinals, she was pinned by Lucy Kohnen of Manson-Northwest Webster in 1:43. In the consolation rounds, she pinned Gabby Mateo Merida of Marshalltown in 2:52 and pinned Elizabeth Vaskova of Nevada in 5:04. In the 3rd place match, Horvath was pinned by Laila Christophersen of South Central Calhoun in 1:18. 

At 190 pounds, Alissa Kirsch placed 4th. In the quarterfinals, she was pinned by Olivia Wise of Marshalltown in :39. In the consolation rounds, she received a bye and pinned Meke Kuipers of East Sac County in 4:33. In the 3rd place match, she was pinned by Tatum Tharp of Ames in 1:30. 

Boone placed 8th in the 12-team field with 110.5 points. Ridge View won the meet with 174 points.  

Other teams participating were Manson-Northwest Webster, Ames, Nevada, Marshalltown, Gilbert, Independence, Norwalk, South Central Calhoun, Southeast Polk and East Sac County.

Boone will host Ogden in a dual meet at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, January 6, in Boone.
