The Class 1A, No. 2, Madrid boys’ basketball team made a triumphant return to the state tournament with a victory over Ankeny Christian, 66-46, in a substate final Saturday, March 1, at the Knapp Center on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines.
The Tigers took control and led, 22-10, at the end of the 1st quarter and were up, 33-19, at the half.
Madrid remained ahead at the end of 3rd quarter, 44-35, and won the game, 66-46.
Jevyn Severson led all scorers with 20 points on 9 field goals and 2 free throws, and Toryn Severson scored 16 points on 5 field goals, 1 3-pointer and 5 free throws.
Additionally, Brody Buck added 12 points on 3 field goals, 2 3-pointers, and 4 free throws while Fabian Ortiz-Alaniz also had 12 points on 4 field goals, 2 3-pointers and 2 free throws.
Toryn and Jevyn Severson dished out 5 assists each while Emerson Bridgewater had 4 assists.
For the Tiger defense, Toryn and Jevyn Severson had 8 rebounds each while Bridgewater grabbed 7 rebounds and 3 steals.
Madrid improves to 25-0 with the win, and Ankeny Christian ends its season at 17-8.
Madrid will be the No. 2 seed in Class 1A and will face No. 7 seed Boyden-Hull at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, at the 2025 Iowa High School Athletic Association State Basketball Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
The Tigers qualified for state in 2023 but fell short in 2024.
