Farrell wins 100 for Madrid boys’ track

Sprinter Jacob Farrell led the charge for the Madrid boys’ track team at the Hap Merritt Invitational on Monday, May 12 in Pleasantville.

Sprinter Jacob Farrell led the charge for the Madrid boys’ track team at the Hap Merritt Invitational on Monday, May 12 in Pleasantville. 

Farrell captured 1st place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.34 seconds. 

The distance medley relay team of Loken Velky, Tyler Sonnenfelt, Toryn Severson, and Blake Renze finished 2nd with a time of 3:49.96, 

The quartet of Kinnick Grimm, Brody Buck, Easton Halverson, and Will Atkinson secured 3rd place in the shuttle hurdle relay, clocking in at 1:03.98. 

The Tigers also placed 3rd in the 4×100-meter relay, with Velky, Farrell, Jake Sawyer, and Sonnenfelt combining for a time of 44.14 seconds. 

Madrid finished third overall with 74 points, and Earlham claimed the team title with 109 points.

The Tigers now turns its focus to the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet, which it will host Thursday, May 15.  

The meet will feature Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center, Ackley-Geneva/Wellsburg-Steamboat Rock, Ankeny Christian, Audubon, Cumberland-Anita-Massena, Colo-Nesco, Coon Rapids-Bayard, Empigo Academy, Glidden-Ralston, Madrid Nodaway Valley, Paton-Churdan, South Hamilton, West Fork, Woodward Academy. 

The Iowa High School Track & Field Championships will be Thursday, May 22, through Saturday, May 24, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
