BOONE, Iowa—Charles Joseph “Chuck” Haberer, 91, of rural Boone, Iowa, was reunited with his Heavenly Father and loving wife Betsy on August 8th, 2025.
Chuck was born in Boone, Iowa on February 14, 1934, the son of Leo and Mary (Schall) Haberer. He was third in line of the four children, two older sisters and one younger.
He was a 1952 graduate of Boone High School and continued his education at Iowa State University, graduating in 1959 with a BS degree in Farm Operation. Chuck proudly served in the United States Army from August 1956 to May 1958.
On June 7th, 1958, Chuck was united in The Bonds of Holy Matrimony to Elizabeth McGrane of Des Moines, Iowa at the Holy Trinity Church in Des Moines. The couple settled on the family farm where they made their home for over 60 years and raised their seven children. A kind and quiet man, it’s been said that no one planted a straighter row than Chuck.
Over the years, Chuck served on the Board of Directors of the Boone and West Central Cooperatives. After retiring from farming, he was a caretaker of Bass Point Cemetery.
He enjoyed fishing trips to Minnesota and Canada. Chuck enjoyed Hershey bars, western movies and was an avid reader of western novels, known to finish a paperback book in one sitting. He was a lifetime member of the Hunt and Fish Club. Chuck enjoyed visiting with friends at the VFW, where he also served on the Honor Guard. He was a faithful member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Boone and served in the Knights of Columbus.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Mary Haberer; his wife, Betsy; sisters, Joan Matt, Bonnie Schnell, Carol Loran, and great-granddaughter Emma Riordan.
He is survived by his children, Sue (Michael) Harber, Anne Riordan, Charlie (Sally) Haberer, Tom (Julie) Haberer, Jim (Melissa) Haberer, Julia Haberer, and Teresa Haberer. His grandchildren, Sarah, Lyssa, Jordan, Noah, Jesse, Amalia, Mei, Tai, Mathew, Alex, Justin, Amanda, Aubry, Aric, Wylan, Owen, Andrew, Ethan, and 16 great- grandchildren and many nieces and nephews will continue to carry on his memory.
Although his recent residence was the Eastern Star Masonic Home, his home will always remain RR 4, Boone.
Visitation is Thursday, August 14, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel, 1006 6th Street, Boone. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, August 15, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. at the Church of the Sacred Heart, 915 12th Street, Boone, with Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Bass Point Cemetery, Boone, with Military Honors by the Boone Veterans Council.
