Arnold Braland

BOONE, Iowa—Arnold “Arnie” Braland, 89, of Boone, passed away at home on Friday, August 29, 2025.

Arnie was born on November 18, 1935, in Randall, the son of Oscar and Elizabeth (Tjernagel) Braland. He graduated from Randall Consolidated High School in 1954.

Arnie was united in marriage to Charlene “Char” Michel on September 1, 1956 in Boone. They lived in many different places throughout Iowa and Illinois, before settling back in Boone in 1963.

In the 1970’s, he owned and operated Braland’s Standard in Boone. After Braland’s Standard, Arnie worked at the Memorial Union at Iowa State University for ten years before retiring.

Arnie enjoyed auto racing at numerous local tracks for eighteen years. He was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in Algona and Webster City. He enjoyed sports, particularly rooting for the Iowa Hawkeyes football and basketball teams, along with the Chicago Cubs. Arnie loved spending time with his family, camping, and playing cards with his sisters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 68 years, Char, in 2024; son, Brian Arnold Braland; two brothers, Mervin Braland and William Braland; and two sisters, Alice Scales and Lois Luther.

Arnold is survived by three of his children, Rick (Sharon) Braland of Ogden, Dianne (Gary) Frisk of Indianapolis, IN, and Lori (Perry) Brown of Boone; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joan Williams of Story City and Janet (Arlo) Richardson of Huxley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, September 4, 2025, at Augustana Lutheran Church, 309 South Greene Street, Boone. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, with Rev. Robin Coughennower officiating. Inurnment will be in Linwood Park Cemetery, Boone.
