
The Madrid Tigers boys’ basketball team opened its season Tuesday, December 2, pulling out a 54-53 non-conference victory over Southeast Valley at the Jaguars’ home court.
The game was tight from start to finish, with Madrid holding slim leads at every break: 12-11 after the first quarter, 24-23 at halftime, and 44-41 heading into the fourth.
Jevyn Severson and Zach Newell powered Madrid’s offense, each scoring 19 points.
Severson hit 7 of 9 free throws, while Newell knocked down four three-pointers and added 5 of 8 free throws.
Newell also dominated the boards with 13 rebounds and 4 blocks, while Severson contributed 7 rebounds and 2 steals.
Emerson Bridgewater chipped in 6 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, and Logan Bogardus added 5 points along with a team-high 4 assists.
The win moves Madrid to 1-0, while Southeast Valley falls to 0-1.
Madrid travels to Creston on Thursday, December 4, for another non-conference matchup at the Southwestern Community College Gymnasium.
