
BOONE, Iowa—For the Boone Fire Department it started right before 2:00 Thursday afternoon when they responded to a structure fire at the Bomgaars Store at 1815 South Story Street. The report was that smoke was coming from the building. The Fire Department released a statement on their Facebook page:
At approximately 1:53PM this afternoon, the Boone Fire Department was dispatched to Bomgaars, 1815 S Story St. for smoke coming from the building. Engine 8-65 responded with 3 interior firefighters and Chief 8-60 responded as well. All off-duty firefighters were paged to respond. 3 additional interior firefighters responded with Truck 8-66, 1 interior firefighter with 2 probationary firefighters responded with Engine 8-62 and 2 interior firefighters responded with Command 8-64.
Engine 8-65 arrived approximately 5 minutes after the 911 call was placed, finding smoke coming from an exterior wall of the building. Investigation found the fire to be contained to the exterior block wall with heat extending up to the roof. A smoldering fire was found burning in the wall. Firefighters were able to access and extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire was determined to be electrical in nature. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters during the incident.
The Boone Fire Department was assisted by the Boone County Communications Center, Boone Police Department, Boone County Hospital and Bomgaars staff.
Boone Firefighters were then called to assist the Ogden Fire Department with a structure fire, a home at 723 200th Street, the Nathan and Justine Morgan residence. Following that call the Fire Department posted this report:
At approximately 4:52PM this afternoon, the Boone Fire Department was dispatched to assist the Ogden Fire Department with a residential structure fire, requesting manpower and tankers. Engine 8-61 and Tanker 8-63 responded from the Boone Fire Department with 4 interior firefighters. All off-duty firefighters were paged to respond. Once ensuring that enough firefighters were present to ensure fire protection for the City of Boone, Rescue 8-67 responded with 3 additional firefighters and 1 probationary firefighter.
Boone Fire arrived to assist the Ogden Fire Department who already had firefighters interior searching the residence for victims and initiating fire attack. Boone Firefighters deployed ground ladders and searched the second floor for victims. Thankfully, no people were found in the residence although multiple pets perished in the fire. Once searches were complete, Boone firefighters assisted Ogden firefighters with extinguishing fire throughout the first floor, second floor and into the attic of the home.
Also assisting during the incident was Ogden First Responders, Boone County Communications Center, Boone County Ambulance, Boone County Sheriff’s Office, Boone County Emergency Management and Alliant Energy.
It wasn’t over as the department received a third structure fire call on Thursday evening. Following that call, they released this information on their Facebook page:
At approximately 9:38PM last evening, the Boone Fire Department was dispatched to 521 Crawford St. for a fire in the basement. Engine 8-65 responded from the Boone Fire Department with 2 firefighters and Command 8-64 responded with 2 firefighters who were out of quarters at the time of the dispatch. All off-duty firefighters were paged to respond. Chief 8-60 responded, Truck 8-66 with 3 interior firefighters and 1 probationary firefighter and Engine 8-62 responded with 3 interior firefighters.
Command 8-64 and Engine 8-65 arrived on scene approximately 5 minutes after the 911 call was placed, finding heavy smoke coming from the basement. Firefighters found a fire burning in the furnace and ductwork in the basement, pushing smoke throughout the residence. All occupants were able to evacuate on their own. Firefighters searched the residence finding no other occupants or fire. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters during the incident, although 2 families were displaced as a result of the damage to the furnace and smoke damage. It was learned later that one tenant had used an extinguisher to knock down the fire, helping to contain the fire prior to our arrival.

As this was the 3rd building fire that the Boone Fire Department has responded to today with several off-duty firefighters responding to assist multiple times, we’d also like to acknowledge our firefighter families who have allowed our firefighters to spend a large majority of their afternoon and evening helping serve our community.
