
A softball game that stretched across two days ended with Ogden advancing in postseason play as the Bulldogs held off Madrid for a 4-3 victory in a Class 2A Region 1 quarterfinal completed Thursday, July 9, at Ogden High School.
The contest began Wednesday, July 8, but was suspended with Ogden holding a 3-2 lead in the middle of the third inning.
When play resumed Thursday, the Bulldogs maintained their advantage and secured the one-run win to move on in regional action.
Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Aubrey Leonard, who collected three hits, including a double, scored two runs, and stole three bases.
Clara Kruse added two hits for Ogden, while Lauren Mathews contributed a hit.
Harleigh Janssen drove in a run with one hit,
Grace Christensen scored a run and added an RBI, and Adi Banks also recorded an RBI.
Sidney Crane scored one of the Bulldogs’ four runs.
In the circle, Katie Wilcoxson earned the complete-game victory, striking out three batters.
For Madrid, Kiera Alt paced the Tigers with two hits, including a double.
Mayzie Surratt delivered a hit and drove in two runs, while Audrey Brown had a hit, scored a run, and collected an RBI.
Rylee Borcherding and Savannah Bradley each added a hit, with Bradley also scoring a run. Giana Tjernagel contributed an RBI.
Surratt went the distance in the circle for Madrid, recording four strikeouts in the complete-game loss.
Ogden improved to 21-16 overall and advanced to face Grand View Christian (25-2) on Friday, July 10.
Madrid finished its season with a 19-16 overall record and a 9-11 mark in the West Central Activities Conference.
For the season, Surratt led Madrid with 54 hits, while Brown finished with 46 hits and 33 RBIs.
Samantha Springer added 40 hits and 25 RBIs, while Tilly Sweet contributed 27 RBIs.
Surratt also drove in 23 runs.
Surratt was equally dominant in the pitching circle, compiling 19 victories and 188 strikeouts.
