AMES, Iowa—Applications are open for the fall 2026 Garden Academy cohort, a required training for anyone who would like to become an Iowa Master Gardener. Garden Academy will be offered in 34 counties this fall, with a deadline to apply of Aug. 14. The session begins Aug. 31.
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has offered Master Gardener training for over 40 years, engaging more than 15,000 people in learning about research-based gardening practices, said Alicia Herzog, Master Gardener program manager with ISU Extension and Outreach.
To become an Iowa Master Gardener, participants choose a county to apply with, complete the online Garden Academy training and attend an in-person volunteer orientation organized by their county office. After finishing training and orientation, trainees complete a 40-hour internship in their county, applying what they’ve learned. Master Gardeners then use that horticulture knowledge to educate others and coordinate projects that support healthy communities.
Counties are seeking participants of all backgrounds and experience levels who want to grow their horticultural knowledge and give back locally.

Iowa Master Gardeners choose from various types of volunteer projects, including tending ornamental gardens, growing produce for donation to local food pantries and sharing public presentations about horticulture topics.
