The Madrid girls’ cross country team opened the season in impressive fashion Thursday, August 27, winning the team championship at the Southeast Valley Invitational held at Gowrie Country Club.
The Tigers placed four runners in the top 10 and five in the top 25 to finish with 38 points, comfortably ahead of runner-up Manson Northwest Webster, which scored 71 points.
Leading the way for Madrid was senior Madelyn Grothus, who finished second overall in the 5K race with a time of 20:09.58.
She was joined near the front by senior Hannah Brandhorst, who took fourth in 21:09.08, and sophomore Charis Peasley, who finished sixth in 21:56.20.
Eighth-grader Jordyn Adams added an eighth-place finish in 22:05.62.
Madrid’s fifth scoring runner, sophomore Makayla Mullenbach, crossed the line in 24:00.18 to place 24th overall and secure the Tigers’ winning team score.
The depth of Madrid’s roster was also on display as senior Adelyn White finished 30th in 24:59.31 and freshman Claire McCarty followed closely behind in 31st with a time of 25:00.86.
Additional finishes came from sophomore Alaina Dvorak (25:52.44), senior Ari Mundy (26:43.97), sophomore Ella Hutchinson (27:50.59), junior Kimee Smith (29:22.72), and senior Alyssa Sonnenfelt (34:03.63).
Panorama’s Kylie Rochholz claimed the individual championship in 19:24.25.
