The Madrid football team continued its strong start to the season Friday, September 4, using an explosive first half to defeat North Mahaska 36-8 at New Sharon.

The Tigers scored 16 points in the first quarter and added 14 more in the second to build a commanding 30-0 halftime advantage.

Madrid tacked on six more points in the third quarter before North Mahaska broke up the shutout with its only touchdown and two-point conversion in the fourth quarter.

Madrid’s ground game powered the victory, led by Jevyn Severson, who rushed six times for 48 yards and scored three touchdowns.

Quarterback Chase Perkins added another rushing score while leading the offense from under center.

Perkins completed 2 of 5 passes for 11 yards and also led the Tigers in rushing with 85 yards on nine carries, accounting for one touchdown on the ground.

His dual-threat ability helped Madrid control the tempo throughout the evening.

The Tigers spread the ball around in the running game.

Landon Lenehan carried nine times for 58 yards and a touchdown, while Mason Morman added 50 yards on six attempts.

Will Atkinson chipped in 31 yards on three carries, and Kole Deppe recorded six yards on two carries.

Severson was also Madrid’s leading receiver, catching both of the team’s completions for 11 yards.

Madrid converted three two-point attempts, receiving successful conversions from Max Fowler, Perkins and Severson.

Kole Deppe led the Tiger defense with four tackles.

Corbin Furness added three tackles, while Morman contributed 2.5 tackles and Logan Bogardus finished with two tackles.

With the victory, Madrid improved to 2-0 on the season. North Mahaska fell to 0-2.

The Tigers have now opened the year with back-to-back victories and will host Brooklyn-Gurnsey-Malcolm Friday, September 11.

The game will be broadcast on KWBG, FM 101.5, AM 1590, and will stream on kwbglive.com with pregame at 6:15 and kickoff at 7 p.m. with sports director Ryan Wendt on the call.
