KWBG Senior Spotlight: Madelyn Grothus, Madrid Senior

KWBG 09/11/26

Transcript

with us on our senior spotlight on KWBG. Gonna head to Madrid this week as Madeleine Growth is going to join us and an opportunity to ask Madeleine about school and homecoming. And I had her older sister on, so I may have to revisit the question on the fastest growth in the family. We've got some runners, but we'll wait on that for a little bit. Madeleine, tell me about senior year so far. We're not quite a month in, but we got about three weeks under our belt. Yeah, hi, Ryan. Senior week, or senior has been a really great kickoff to the year. This week we have homecoming, so everyone's just super excited and lighthearted. It's really fun seeing all my friends dress up and dressing up with them on Friday for Spirit Day. It's one of those things that is exciting, I know, as my seniors always tell me, but also a little bittersweet. Have you thought about this being your last homecoming? I have thought about it, but I know I can always come back to future homecomings and just be a spectator to the football game. You get to be an alumni then, how about that? Yeah, it would be a new experience. There you go, I like that. So I know Madeleine, you're super busy when it comes to things that matter. I know we'll talk about school here in a little bit. I wanna talk about your activities too, because besides track and cross country, you do some other stuff over at Matter too, don't you? Yeah. Tell me about some of the things that keep you busy. Yeah, I volunteer at our church on Wednesday night with our youth catechesis of the Good Shepherd program, and we're actually kicking that off this Wednesday. So I'm excited for that. I'm also a part of one of the dance organizations that our town has, so I've been doing that for the past couple of weeks. I'm active in our 4-H club and our FFA club, so we've been attending meetings and getting the year going on those clubs too. Madeleine, goodness gracious, and we haven't even barely talked about classes, because I know you're at DMACC and you got classes at Matter. How do you know where you're going? You gotta tell me the secret. Kind of every morning and every night, I just kind of go, where do I need to be and when? And then I just kind of go there. It's not that hard for me, I just kind of do my checklist. Okay, so are you like, do you like the written kind of checklist? Do you have a calendar? Do you have apps? How do you kind of keep things straight? I have a mental checklist. Like I don't really have a calendar or a planner or any of that. I just kind of run through it in my head and keep it organized that way. The only time I actually plan things is when I'm planning when I'm going to run. Okay. Then I use paper. Oh my goodness. So Madeleine, all this stuff is running around through your head, literally. Whew. You gotta tell me someday how that keeps working, okay? Cause I've tried that. It doesn't work as good as it does for you. All right, so school. I know I just kind of mentioned that you're at DMACC in the mornings and then matters in the afternoon. Boy, you have a full day of activities before you even get to any activities. Yeah, I have DMACC starting at 8 a.m. every day. And then on Mondays and Wednesdays, I don't get back to school until around 11 30 because I have DMACC all morning on Mondays and Wednesdays. But it works. I carpool with friends and I'm not the only one from Magic going and taking these classes. So it's not so bad. Now Madeleine, have you been doing DMACC courses for a while now or is this year number one? I've taken online DMACC classes since I was a freshman, but this is the first time I'm doing in-person classes. I would tell kids that they need to jump on DMACC or jump on some sort of community college right away. Madeleine, because I've talked to so many seniors. You guys all tell me almost unanimously, it is the best way to get classes already started for when you're going to be a freshman next year. Have you found it really beneficial so far? Yeah, definitely. And when I'm looking at colleges and crop referencing which classes I've already taken, it helps to see how many gen eds that all have covered or done. And it's really nice to see that I'll go to college already having some classes done. All right, so speaking of Madeleine, I'm going to fast forward you a little bit. I'm not going to try to rush your senior year, but take me to May of next year. Diplomas in hand, it's signed. What does the future look like for Madeleine growth us? I would like to go to college and keep running. I'd like to major in a science related field like biology, research or geology. I'm not sure what college I'll want to go to, but going to Loris with my sister seems like a nice option because I'll have family there and close by. But I've also looked at North Westminster State because a lot of central Iowa runners have gone there and seem to enjoy it. Do you have a target date, Madeleine, when you'd like to know where you're going to go? Is this going to be one of those things where all of a sudden maybe you wake up one morning and go, you know what, I want to go here. No, my decision kind of changes every day. So it'll be a while before I actually decide because there's so many factors to consider and I just want to focus on completing my senior year and we'll go from there. Yep, I think no, Madeleine, I'm not putting any pressure on you. I think that makes great sense actually. Now, I know you told me that your carpool was some friends from DMACC to Madrid. So I want to know when you have free time, I don't know when that is, Madeleine, but when you do have free time, what do you and the friends like to go do? Some of my friends have gone line dancing in Woodward and I haven't gone with them, but I think that would be a goal this year is to go line dancing with them out and buy Woodward. Now, are we talking like the cowboy hats and the cowboy boots and all that? No, exactly. They say you can show up in shorts and a T-shirt and do what they call how you are. You need to, if this goes down, Madeleine, I want to know how it went, okay? Okay. All right, so let's talk a little bit about sports because I know that keeps you really busy at Madrid as well. You had your first last cross country meet. How's the season been going for you so far? As you said, I've had only one meet so far, so hopefully there's still a lot of improvement this year for me, but that race went really well for me and for my team. Our team won the meet, so that was a really great way to start off the season. And unfortunately, our second meet, which was our home meet got canceled, but I think our team bonded a lot, doing morning workouts that week. So yeah, there's been a lot of ups and downs already throughout the season, but I'm really excited for how it will play out and then how track season will unfold as well. Well, Madeleine, I talked about this offer and I talked about it a little bit when we got started, but I asked her older sister when she was on the senior spotlight, not too long ago, but I said, who is the fastest growthist in the family? Cause I know we got some runners. Now Madeleine maybe has changed who the number one growthist is running. Now Madeleine, who's the number one runner in the growthist family now? The number one runner in my growthist family is our pet dog, Taz. He is a cockapoo and he goes on runs with my dad and pushes the pace every time. You told me the dog every time to see somebody on the bike, all of a sudden dad's got to hurry up, huh? Yeah, the pace just drops and drops the longer you run with the dog. So dad has dropped to number two. I hope he's okay hearing that, but I guess that is what it is. Yeah, we all need a good training partner. Yes we do, yes we do. Madeleine, I always like to end these interviews with a little piece of advice cause I feel like you've had a chance to be at Madrid High School, you've had experiences, whether it be sports or activities, but I want a piece of advice. So if we had an incoming freshman, Madeleine, coming in and they said, hey, I want to have a great four years at Madrid, give them some advice. What do you think you'd tell them to do? I would say it's okay to take your time and really enjoy and really name how you feel in the moment that rushing through high school isn't gonna make more memories. You're gonna make more memories by slowing down and really getting to know people. That is a great advice. Madeleine, thank you so much for some time. Best of luck the rest of your senior year. We'll be watching. Yes, thank you. You bet. Madeleine growth is again joining us senior at Madrid on our senior spotlight.
