The Boone girls’ swimming team turned in a dominant performance Thursday, September 17, defeating Des Moines East at home, 147-33, during the Project Be the Light meet.
Boone took the top three places in several individual events.
“We hit a lot of great swims tonight, and many were personal bests that I didn’t honestly think were going to happen,” said head coach Chris Mann.
“We are in the middle of a heavy training week and to see some of these times pop shows the excitement that the girls brought to the meet tonight,” Mann said.
The Toreadors opened the varsity competition by winning the 200-yard medley relay.
The team of Claire Enabnit, Ellie Hughes, Cali Hernandez and Makenzie Klatt won in 2:02.26.
Boone won the 200 freestyle relay as Aleah Karolus, Maylin Griffis, Kilee Hughes and Morgan Cox teamed for a time of 1:52.00.
The Toreadors closed the meet by taking the 400 freestyle relay.
Karolus, Ellie Hughes, Lucy Enabnit and Harper Houston won in 4:02.64.
Karolus captured the 200-yard freestyle in 2:02.61, with Quinn Houston second in 2:06.72 and Lucy Enabnit third in 2:20.23.
Kilee Hughes added a victory in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:34.39, while Lilli Lucht placed second in 2:40.92.
Avery Howie won the 50 freestyle in 25.67 seconds, followed by Klatt in second at 27.56 and Sara Gute in third at 27.69.
Ellie Hughes won the 100 butterfly in 1:06.84, while Finley Houser was second in 1:11.48.
In the 100 freestyle, Boone swept the top three spots behind Quinn Houston in 58.12, Harper Houston in 1:00.41 and Gute in 1:02.08.
The Toreadors produced another sweep in the 500 freestyle.
Avery Howie won in 5:52.73, edging teammate Claire Enabnit, who finished in 5:54.41.
Cox was third in 6:04.07.
Karolus earned another individual victory in the 100 backstroke, finishing in 1:03.40.
Claire Enabnit was second in 1:08.60, and Harper Houston took third in 1:15.14.
Boone swept the top three spots again in the 100 breaststroke.
Klatt won in 1:19.29, Lucy Enabnit finished second in 1:23.27 and Kilee Hughes was third in 1:27.21.
Boone also took the top two places in diving, with Amaya Filipiak winning with 183.25 points and Chloey Williams finishing second with 155.15.

“Tonight was a wonderful opportunity to support a family in Boone County, the Kennedys,” Mann said.
“Julie Kennedy was awarded $5,000 from Project Be the Light at our meet tonight as we took time to spread awareness of our Boone County Hospital Foundation and their work to give money to families affected by cancer.”
“The Kennedys hold a special place in the heart of Boone Swimming as their daughter, Lauren, was an Ogden student-athlete that swam for Boone from 2016-2019,” Mann said.
“Through the efforts of the meet tonight, we were able to raise over $1500 to help more families facing cancer in the future.”
The Toreadors have an overall Record of 11-1 and a duel record of 2-0.
The next meet is Saturday, September 19, at the Marshalltown Invite.
