KWBG Senior Spotlight: Maddox McIntyre, Boone Senior

With us on our senior spotlight on KWBG, get to talk to Boone senior Maddox Macintyre, gonna talk about sports and, oh, we'll talk about how school's going and everything else. Maybe that's what we'll start, Maddox is almost a month into your senior year. Tell me how the school year's been going so far. It's been a pretty laid back, I'd say, especially compared to the other years. Not a lot of like super strenuous classes I've taken. So, it really gives me lots of time to just sit back and relax and get work done if I need to. That's good. It always sounds like, and you can tell me, Maddox, junior and sophomore year, the most difficult, huh? Yeah, for sure. Especially last year, I was taking algebra two, which in my opinion is one of the hardest classes I've taken, but that was a lot. And then also feel like going to DMAT classes and coming back to the high school to take classes, you know, that was a lot to where it's like, this year I can more just focus on either just high school or just DMAT classes. It's not too much of both. Have you taken quite a few DMAT classes, Maddox, so far in your career? Um, yeah, I've took some DMAT English classes last year.

I took a DMAT Western Civ class, and then I've gone to the DMAT campus and taken some like psychology and philosophy classes, which were, it was something different, but I thought they were really interesting, so. Were those difficult to take on a college campus? It was harder than high school classes, I'd say, but not as difficult as like what I expected at first. Okay. The instructors are pretty laid back and they'll help you out a lot, so that's always really nice. And it felt like you fit in pretty good as well with the college kids? Yeah, yeah. I mean, a lot of those students are also new to college, so it's really not like I'm completely out of place there, so it was all, it was pretty laid back. That's good. So senior year, what's your favorite class right now, Maddox, if you had to pick one of them that you enjoy going to every day? I know school is school, but if you had to pick one, give me one that you're enjoying. Honestly, this is my first year taking it because I've been in orchestra, but this year I joined the band. I've had, I don't know, I've had a lot of fun doing band. It's just something different that I haven't done before, and I don't know, I think it's pretty fun to go to that class. Is there a favorite instrument that you have, or that you're taking as well? Yeah, yeah, so I played the violin when I was in orchestra, but now that I'm in, because obviously there's no more orchestra, so now that I'm in band, they have me doing the drumline stuff because it's marching band season right now, so I've kind of learned to play the quads is what I'm doing right now, and I really like that. That has to be a, tell me about the learning curve going from one to another. Yeah, so I started out, obviously I didn't really know much of what I was doing, but there's a lot less notes to learn for the quads as there is compared to the violin, so it makes it simpler in a way. It's just very like, either the rhythm has to be perfect, and that's the more challenging part is keeping that rhythm perfect, because the drums are kind of the rhythm keepers of the band. Maddox, I was gonna say the drums are kind of, I mean, not that anything isn't important. I think you understand what I say that, but I mean, the drums are kind of important. You mess up there, Maddox, I think everybody's gonna notice. Yeah, yeah, for sure, for sure, so. But it's been fun learning that, so. So did you start Maddox sometime this summer, or like when school started, or how did you kind of transition from one to the other? Yeah, so there was like a week-long band camp where you showed up for about three, four-ish hours. Oh, wow. For a week, and yeah, I went through, that's when I started learning the drums, started learning the drill for our steps and stuff like that, so I got started a little bit before school. Okay, that sounds good. That helped. Now, learning that, and then we've also got football going on at the same time, Maddox, you gotta have some pretty good time management, don't ya? Yeah, yeah, for sure. I did, it is hard to play during the football games, so I am focusing, I decided to just focus on football, during the football games, and then I'll play during the parades and stuff for a band, so that helps me stay locked in during the football games and stuff like that. I gotcha. Do you still kind of find yourself listening a little bit when you hear, I mean, you got, obviously you're paying attention to the coaches, I wouldn't say that, but I mean, you gotta listen a little bit, right? No, yeah, for sure. Like after we'll do our little halftime or pre-game meetings, and we're kind of just staying around waiting, it's funny because I actually can hear what's going on in the band, I kind of understand what's going on more, so it honestly makes it more interesting to listen to it now, just have more respect for what they're playing. Sure, because, well, yeah, you'd be right there if you weren't on the field. Yeah, for sure. Maddox, keep yourself busy obviously with band now and with activities as well. If you don't have those things going on, tell me, what do you like to do kind of in your free time? Um, yeah, I mean, obviously hanging out with friends is always fun. You know, in the summers, we always go and play tickle balls, the big thing we find ourselves doing. We go and be friends, I guess, and try to enjoy free time, sleep in on the weekends if I can. Of course, of course, of course, we always take that. Now, when you and the friends like to go out and do stuff, are you guys, are you big shoppers? Do you like to go restaurants, movies? What do you guys like to do to kind of unwind if you're gonna go out all together? It's kind of a sad thing. We always find ourselves ending up at like a food place and eating food, which, I mean, it's not terrible, but, you know, maybe not too much eating out all the time, but I understand. But I bet you, you probably, I'm guessing you change it up. You probably don't end up at the same spot all the time, do you? No, no, we usually, we'll go to Ames or if we feel like it, Perkins is one of our favorite places we like going late at night, just because it's always open, so. And breakfast all the time. That's one of my favorites. Yeah, yeah. We take that. Hey, listen, I got nothing against Perkins, trust me on that. Um, but we love ourselves some Perkins. So look. Yeah, for sure. Fast forward me a little bit. What are some things you're looking forward to this year? Obviously, we already had our first football game and some other things have already happened like first day of school and whatnot, but give me some other things. What else are you looking forward to your senior year, Maddox? Um, yeah, obviously looking forward to the rest of the football season, just, you know, seeing how things end up. I'm looking forward to, I have a, you know, more band, I guess. Yeah. When football is done, I can do different stuff with bands, but it'll be fun, um, trying to think of what else. Like homecoming and proms, are those stuff you'd like to go to do? Oh yeah. Yeah, for sure. The dances, I guess, you know, was the last year I got to go to the dances, so I got to make sure those are fun. And yeah, all stuff like that. All the, if there's all the senior stuff that you never got to do when you're younger, so. I got you. I'm looking forward to doing all the special stuff the seniors get to do. You bet, you bet. Let's really fast forward you now. Graduation, diploma in hand, Maddox. Give me some future plans. What do you think you're gonna be doing this time next year? Yeah, so I haven't made a, like, official choice on college, but I've looked at quite a few. I know my mom is really big on me visiting as many colleges as I can, so I can find something that's the right fit for me. So I've been to a lot of those. I'm really, I'm thinking I wanna play a sport in college. I'm just trying to debate between either football or track. Still gotta make a decision on that. But yeah, I feel like once I can really decide, after football season, I'll make that decision probably of where I wanna go play either football or track and hoping to maybe go into either kinesiology or some type of athletic training and find a job similar to that, so. Okay, now you said you've been to a bunch of colleges. Are we talking like a dozen, five, six? How many have we been visiting so far? I'd say about like five or six. Okay. I think I went up, I've been to Warburg. We went to Luther, Central, down in Pella, Simpson. Went up to Morningside for a football game. I feel like I'm, oh, we're going up to Cornell in a couple months to visit there, so. Boy, you picked a bunch of good campuses. Yeah, yeah. And then I've been on school field trips to all the big ones. I would stay in Iowa, you and I, and all those, so. I've seen a lot of the schools in Iowa, so. That's great. Should help me make a decision. And I'm guessing that's where you wanna stay then. A lot of state just kinda stick around in Iowa somewhere? Yeah, yeah, probably, yeah. I mean, Iowa, I think it's a great place, so I can't head on it too much. Nope, I. And especially stay close to family, you know. Maybe go out a little bit, I'm not always with the family and branching out, but maybe not too far to where I can still stay in touch. Maddox, what you do is you're far enough away that they don't wanna come visit you all the time, but you're close enough you can get laundry done. How about that? Yeah, yeah, exactly. Exactly. Maddox, before we let you go, I always ask my seniors one little piece of advice that they would give, an incoming freshman. You can pick sports or school or whatever you want, Maddox, but what kind of a piece of advice do you think you'd give an incoming freshman? Yeah, honestly, I'd say I learned senior year, try to just do everything you can because you start to realize that this is the last year you get to do some of this stuff, but you don't wanna end up going to college and looking back and regretting not doing something because you can't ever do it again, so just try to do everything you possibly can while you can.
