With us on our senior spotlight, KWBG going to talk to Boone senior Avery Howey today and we're going to talk about swimming and school and probably throw some softball in there as well. Avery, first off, how senior you're going as you're almost almost a month right in right now? Yeah, almost. I'd say it's going pretty good so far. Now, I know you're busy when it comes to activities and school and everything else. So tell me about school first. How's the first almost month of school been going for you? First month has gone pretty good. I mean, senior year don't have a whole lot of classes so can't complain too much about that. All right, so tell me about because I know you're also taking something out at DMACC and you got something at the high school as well. Tell me about the differences in taking something at Boone High School and then taking something at DMACC. Are there big differences? Well, I'm not really sure. So the cost I'm taking through DMACC is actually taught at the high school. Okay, so you don't have to worry about going out to campus yet? No, not yet. I got you. I got you. All right. What are we taking right now for classes? Um, comp, which is taught at the high school. I'm taking Ensure to Ethics, which is online for DMACC and then just a couple in-person classes. All right. So I always ask my seniors this because it's usually 50-50. So I'm going to see where you fall, Avery. I mean, I'm interested to see but would you rather do in-person? Would you rather do online? Um, I would probably say online because I can kind of do it all at my own pace and get it done when I feel like getting it done. There you go. Now, is it, is it a little bit easier when it is kind of at your own pace or is it more difficult to where you maybe like, oh, I can wait a couple of days and all of a sudden, uh-oh, I can't? Um, I like it honestly because with sports and stuff, I'm like, oh, I have a meet tonight so I could just do it tomorrow and then, yeah. All right. Now we know that girl's swimming really, really strong start to the season. Always good to see you back at 100% to Avery. I know you had an injury that happened during basketball last year. You told me off air though, you're feeling pretty good. Yeah, I am feeling great this year. When, when did you get clearance to kind of, you know, first start getting in the pool and starting to get back to being where you felt before the injury? Um, I got clearance to start swimming just by the end of the summer to fully start swimming for school and that was, that was really nice to hear after recovering. What did it feel like the first time to get back in the, uh, the pool? Pretty good? Um, yeah, it's all good at first and then it was way harder than I thought it was going to be, but how long did it take you to start feeling back to, uh, to normal again? Um, well, I did some stuff in the off season so that definitely helped a little bit, but it definitely took a little bit longer than I was thinking. Okay. So midway through summer, end of summer, when did you start kind of feeling like, okay, I'm ready for, I'm ready for false women? Um, kind of mid summer, honestly, I was bored of not playing softball. So I was going to say, was that a tough one this past summer? Yeah, it was. It was honestly a whole new perspective just sitting and watching. Is it maybe going to make you want to be a coach someday or stay away from that? Um, I can maybe see myself going down that. Okay. All right. Well, tell us about the future a little bit, Avery. What, uh, what plans do you have once graduation hits in the May and the diploma's in hand? What are you going to go do? Um, so I plan to attend Indian Hills community college to play softball and get my associate's science degree and then later transfer to a four year. What do you plan on doing once you go to a four year? We don't have to figure out where we're going yet, but what's the plans kind of maybe even after schooling is done? Um, I think I want to go into physical therapy. Okay. Wow. Well, you've got a little bit of, you've got a little bit of help with that, huh? Uh, yeah, it has definitely helped with that. Maybe not a good way, but at least you know something about it. Has that been something you've been interested in for a while, Avery? Is this newish? Um, honestly, it's kind of newish just after I got hurt having to go to PT a lot. I kind of found a lot of interest in this. All right. I got you. Well, I talked about swimming a little bit and I told Avery there is something that I always ask my swimmers and it's been going on for a long time. Now, if it isn't, isn't like a great story on Chris, it's okay, but we have heard about Chris Mann sometimes being a bully when it comes to practice and a bully it meets. Tell me about that a little bit, Avery. Um, well, it's kind of just depends on what events you get put in. If you get put in a hard event, I mean, he's considered a bully that day because why would you want to swim a hard event, you know? All right. Practice. We're doing a set and it's like eight 100s and we're like, how about six? I'd be like, how about eight? So I'm surprised he doesn't make it 10 after that. Oh, I know. We're kind of thankful sometimes. All right. So give me, this one's always a tough one. I asked my swimmers too, Avery, and I'm pretty sure I know your answer, but give me your favorite event and your least favorite event to swim in. Um, my least favorite event is probably the 500 because it is very long and very boring and very long. It's a lot of time to think. Um, my favorite events, probably the 53. I know it's the shortest and yeah. That one is super fun to watch though, Avery. I know you swim in it and maybe you watch some swimming, you know, when you're not, when you're not in the pool, but that 53 is so much fun to watch. It is. It's such a fast race. It's just so much can happen in such a little race. It's fun. It's neat too to watch you guys in the blocks because, and you know this as well as I do, but you got to get out of the blocks really well in the 53 and just to watch that little bit of anticipation before it goes off and it's time to go. I mean, how can you not get excited about that? Oh, I get excited even just watching people swim it. What's your favorite relay? Um, the four free for sure. Okay. It's the last event in the me. I mean, all the adrenaline and kind of some meat just come down to that. So it's go time then, isn't it? Yeah. All right. So when you're not in the pool and you're not in school and no, I didn't try to rhyme on purpose there. What do you like to do Avery? Give me a couple of things you like to do when you're, you don't have to worry about school. You don't have to worry about practice, no swimming, nothing. What do you like to go do? I honestly just like to go hang out with my friends, maybe go shopping, get some fun drinks. Yeah. All right. So if I tell you Avery, you can go shop anywhere you want unlimited money. Give me your top three spots. Where are you going? Um, probably target. Yep. That's always number one. I swear. I don't, you guys love target. Yeah. That's, that's one of the main places I go. Really? Okay. I thought maybe there'd be a couple of others that would be in there. Maybe like Aery and the mall or something. I thought that was number two. No question. I was waiting for it. I figured that would be two. So okay. That's fair. Um, when you guys aren't shopping and getting drinks and stuff, do we still like to head out to the movie theaters? Do we like to do stuff like that? Or we still like to just kind of hang out at home and watch Flix? Um, I honestly kind of like watching them at home. I'm more, I like watching series more than movies, honestly. Oh, give me a couple of series you're into right now. Um, well, Outer Banks just finished. I was watching My Life with the Walter Boys. Yep. Yeah, those have been my main two recently. I got you. Now, are you a binge watcher or can you like kind of chill, sit back and I'll just watch a couple a day? It kind of depends what mood I'm in, honestly. I could watch a couple or I could sit down and watch a whole season. Watch a whole season. We all fall in that trouble, Avery. That's for sure. Yeah. All right. One last question for Avery. I'll let you go. Uh, piece of advice. We always like to help out kids when it comes to having a great four years at Boone. Avery, if a freshman comes up to you and says, hey, I want to have a great four years at Boone High School, give them some advice. What do you think you would tell them to do? I would say try things. Like, if you're interested in going out for a sport or a club, try it because the worst is going to happen if you decide you don't like it, but you don't know unless you go out for it. Good advice.
