Coaches Corner for September 25th: Chris Seaboch, DMACC Golf

with us on coaches corner KWB G going to talk some DMACC golf today. Chris Seabock joining us as he bears a good chance this weekend and I'm figuratively knocking on wood because I don't want to make a bunch of noise coach but I know you guys have a chance to get some rounds in and crazy enough is what is the spring slash fall have been you guys haven't had anything canceled yet. Yeah somehow we've been really lucky. We've played in some rain our in fact our last men's event. We played our practice round in the rain and we played 36 holes on day one in the rain and 18 holes day two in the rain and I think we all came home and didn't even want to shower just want to stay away from water as much as we could. Dry off. Even though a hot shower would have felt good so yeah luckily we've been teasing it together and I guess I mean it only doesn't rain every other day and we've been lucky enough to compete on those days somehow. Well it looks like the last time you were out coach was back on the 18th up in Waterloo. We'll start and talk about the ladies a little bit. Coach I got to tell you it's not a bad start for the first couple. In fact missed a school record. Am I told by one stroke? One stroke both teams actually up there yeah missed it by one stroke and you know we're driving up to Waterloo and it's pouring on us the whole way up. Of course. And we get to warm up and it's raining on us during warm ups and then somehow once tee-off time came it stopped raining and you know it was really wet out so we so you know we had to play lift clean and place that day. But it was a course that if you take advantage of some things you can play pretty well and you know I'm sure the lift clean and place probably helped us a little bit here but the soft ground also negated any role we were going to get and probably cost our girls 20 yards or 30 yards per drive too so uh they are we've got a really good team this year and we've been playing really well the first couple meets you know unlike last year's team I we never really lived up to our capabilities in the fall. I still might say this group isn't totally reaching their capabilities but they're a lot closer to it right now so they've done a great job. Coach you missed the school record by one stroke and they haven't quite hit their potential yet I mean that's a that's a phrase I hope you get a chance to say a bunch and then not say ever again. Yes yeah that's amazing. Tell us about the squad a little bit how the ladies kind of come together I know we're we're pretty balanced when it comes to sophomore freshman class. Yes four sophomores three freshmen on our squad and so it's always nice to have that sophomore leadership coming back for sure and we've got that and then to blend it with three really good freshmen that we have who are coming in and playing well but also we've got time to develop them too so that you know by the springtime or by next year they're playing even better than they are now too so I'm really excited to have this group of young ladies on our squad this year. Well let's talk about the guys a little bit coach once again opportunities to to get out there and actually get some get some rounds and in fact not that long ago in fact looks like back on the 22nd you guys had a chance to head out to East Moline Illinois and a tie for a fourth place finish I was kind of looking coach on who was there and what was scored and everything it looked like a pretty competitive meet. Yeah yeah it was a loaded field I think I'd have to look at everything new coaches poll just came out but I think there were maybe at least six teams ranked in the top 10 of the coaches poll right there now and I think there were two or three more than the receiving votes section so it was a loaded field strong field and yeah it was going to take really good play to have a good finish there. What what puts you guys over the over the top to get up in that top five coach I mean you don't just show up on the course and hey here we go and let's see what happens I mean you had to have some pretty clutch putting and I'm guessing some pretty good drives too. Yeah it was a love the course we'd never been there before was a great facility and it it's got some scoreable holes for sure so it's got some holes that you've got to take advantage of and maybe make a birdie or something but it's got some bears too it had a couple holes eight the 18s one of the greatest 18 holes I've ever seen right it's a great finishing hole super tough to make a par on for sure and we just you know we shot ourselves in the foot in the very first round we were 19 over very uncharacteristic of our squad we just didn't have anybody get it going and I think we were in 10th or 11th place after that round and I challenged our team and especially our sophomores who we have three of in the top five that you know it's time for them to do sophomore things right and they got to come back to second round we played 36 on the day and we need them we need them to perform like they're capable of and they they rebounded back and I think we had the next two rounds were the top three or four lowest of all the teams each time so we had kind of taken ourselves out of contention of first or second after that first round but for the guys to battle back from 10th to fourth I think says a lot about their grit and their determination and their ability to handle the little adversity and come back from it because we could have easily just stayed in 10th and they didn't they fought coach I got to use my fingers and toes sometimes when we're talking about math but I'm pretty sure if you shot one over in the second round and you shot five over in the third round that's six over for two rounds that's 13 strokes better than one round in two rounds I mean you guys yeah there was a little fire lit there coach that there was and you know I I tried to motivate the guys but we try to find kids that are self-motivated right I mean they were all disappointed with how they how they played and we had one kid that just got got in a weird situation got a couple penalty shots and it just took him a few too many holes to kind of put that behind him but he did came back and played well the next couple rounds and you know it's raining and it's not going the way you want to go and all those things and it's really easy to pack in the towel throw in the towel and it didn't so that had to make feel pretty good that's for sure all right tell me what's coming up next coach what do we got next here for uh for dmack gulf uh women are going to go up to uh southern minnesota northern i would play one day in albert lee and then day two and uh at rice lake and lake mills uh good event wall dwarf hosted we were there last year be a good opportunity for us to compete and maybe compete for a title again and then men head back over to the quad cities again uh next weekend for the battle of the mississippi which kind of it's a normal tournament like we normally play you finish first second and third right but it actually is pitting teams located on the west of the mississippi against teams on the east of the mississippi so they don't want to go to iowa schools right oh so you know we all of us see each other a lot and i pull for the iowa schools i want them to play well i wanted to play just a little less less worse than i do right but i want to play well and so it's a been a fun event this is only our second year of what we started it but there's a traveling trophy for the side that wins the mississippi basically and it's going to be another loaded field i mean i think there's probably four or five teams in the top ten well there that are going to be there again so now the great opportunity to build a resume for the guys for sure and a little bragging rights too coach i'd like to go back and and maybe erase that first round and let's just come back and win this one i love that i love that chris always good to talk off with you always appreciate your time best of luck coming up and we'll talk to you again here in a couple of weeks yeah appreciate everything you do for us ryan thank you you bet christie vocking and joining us team at golf here on coach's corner
