Coaches Corner for November 5th: Chris Mann, Boone Girls Swimming

KWBG 11/05/26

Transcript

Joining us on Coach's Corner, KWB and G gonna talk Boon Girls swimming. It's post-season time for the Torridors. Tonight the divers get a chance to try to qualify for state. Then Saturday the rest of the swimmers get a chance as well. And Chris, it kind of feels like it's hurry up and wait. I know the conference meet was, believe it or not, a couple of weeks ago. Now as crazy as that is to say out loud. And now you kind of get that practice time in to get ready to try to go your fastest. Chris, you've been, I guess, thinking about this since August. Yeah, you know, it is the event that we circle. And I sit the girls down every year on the first day of practice and says it's gonna feel like it goes slow, but November is gonna be here before you know it. And here we are. So yeah, we're ready to go and eager to get things started with diving tonight. And then roll through to swimming on Saturday. Chris, when you're going through a week like this week, getting, you know, prepared for, I mean, you've been, I shouldn't say getting prepared. Just kind of fine tuning things for Saturday. Because let's be honest, you guys have been preparing for this meet on Saturday and tonight since you started swimming. So, but I guess I want to know is girls any different at practice? Is the mood any different? Is it silly one day? Serious one day? Is it serious all week? What's the, what are practices kind of feel like? You know, as we, as we taper down, they start to get a little more energy. And so we see a little more silliness, a little more, I don't know, some of it comes out as nerves a little bit and working through those nerves and just knowing that, you know, sports like this, it's tough when your whole season boils down to just a couple races on a given Saturday. And, but you know, that is what we prepare for with all the other meets that we do and all the other practices that we do. So, but yeah, you see a lot more energy on deck, which can be a lot of fun at times and maybe slightly annoying at times and coach wants to give them some more hard sets and wear them out a little bit more. But just knowing they have the energy and that they're going to feel good on Saturday is, is well worth it. All right, I need to ask about the video. Now, were they all supposed to jump in the pool at the same time or did you stagger it on purpose? Cause I'm not going to lie, the staggering look kind of cool. No, they're, we're taking a video and they all jumped in for their, you know, their final morning practice, which is a fun celebration. No more early alarms, no more five in alarms. And they were very indecisive. They all wanted to jump in at the same time, but then they decided the last minute to hold hands and then some of them started jumping in and it did end up looking okay. But it just kind of wraps them up in a nutshell of lots of energy, but maybe a little indecisive. Oh my goodness. Well, I want to talk about the conference meet, but I also want to give the flowers to Morgan Cox coach. A million yards accumulated since her freshman year. I love when I see those posts. One, because what an accomplishment and two, that's tough to do, but yet it seems like we have had girls dedicated because I feel like we see these posts at least once a year. Yeah, it's a super fun thing to keep track of. I mean a million yards is just an obscure amount. The mileage would be like someone from Boone to Denver. And so to put that into perspective a little bit, and like it used to just be a goal to get it by your senior year. Now all these girls are eager to get it. So Morgan's a junior, eager to get it by the end of their junior year. So you got to average like 330,000 yards a season. And like our whole practice schedule, we do about 350,000 yards from day one through state. And so that means like not missing a practice, not being sick, not missing for work or whatever, and hitting all those morning practices. So just a huge achievement. And it's just fun to put that into perspective for them and how that ties into their growth and their getting faster every day. Here to Denver is ridiculous, my goodness. Conference champions coach had to be super excited. 398 points is just a phenomenal effort. I can't single out anybody because I just felt like he had so many great races. Your depth has been so good this season and it just felt like it really was one of those things that helped shine on that Friday. Yeah, that was super fun. Last year did it for the first time in program history and to repeat this year. This year was a little bit different because we could go in. I would say we felt pretty comfortable with a little bit of a cushion that we were going to have with the depth and the time that we've been going all season. And so we were able to beat him up pretty good all week and head into that meet very tired and not suiting no tech suits for that meet and still walking away with like a 80 point win was a good confidence boost. I would say throughout the day they were a little, some of our top girls, a little upset with their times or their places. But the theme of the day was it just matters who's on the podium at the end of the meet when they announce that team champion and that kind of wipes all those frustrations away during the meet that, hey, we won it and they were super excited and got to celebrate.
