Ames Man Sentenced On Charges of Theft and Eluding

KWBG 08/21/18

BOONE, Iowa—A Boone County District Court Judge has sentenced a 35 year old Ames man to 20 years in prison on charges of theft and eluding.  The Boone County Attorney’s office released this information:

Bradley Eugene Allen, 35 years old of Ames, Iowa, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison with the Iowa Department of Corrections by a Boone County District Court Judge. Since Bradley Allen is a Habitual Felon the 20 year sentence carries a mandatory minimum of three years. This sentence will run consecutive to his conviction in Story County that he received on August 13, 2018, for Felon in Possession of a Firearm as a Habitual Felon in which he received 15 years. Both sentences running consecutive total 35 years in prison with the Iowa Department of Corrections. The sentencing in Boone County is a result of a guilty plea on June 25, 2018 in which Bradley Eugene Allen pled guilty to Theft in the First Degree as a Habitual Felon and Eluding a Class D Felony.

According to the Complaint and Affidavits filed in this case on April 17, 2018, a Boone County Sheriff’s Deputy observed a vehicle at W Avenue and Highway 30. The vehicle had no plates on it so the Deputy initiated a traffic stop. The vehicle refused to stop and a pursuit began in Boone County. The pursuit continued in Ames in which Bradley Allen drove this vehicle in excess of 110 mph in speed zones of 25, 35, and 45 mph. Deputies were finally able to use an intervention technique to stop Bradley Allen near the city of Nevada. Further investigation showed that Bradley Allen was the driver of the vehicle and it was reported stolen from a truck stop in Altoona, Iowa. Bradley Allen told the Deputy that he saw the vehicle at the truck stop with no plates and keys in it so he thought it was an easy way to get to Ames so he took the vehicle.

A sentencing hearing was set for this case on August 20, 2018. After hearing the arguments and reviewing Bradley Allen’s criminal history the court sentenced him to 20 years in prison with the Iowa Department of Corrections. The court ordered this sentence to run consecutive to Bradley Allen’s unrelated Felon in Possession of a Firearm conviction from Story County in which he received 15 years in prison. Bradley Allen was sentenced to 35 years in prison.

According to Iowa Courts On-Line Bradley Allen has a history dating back to 2005. He was convicted of Burglary in the Third Degree back in 2005 in which he went to prison for five years. A Theft in the 2nd Degree conviction in 2017 in Story County. A Carrying Weapons conviction in late 2017 and Felon in Possession of a Firearm in 2018 for which he was on probation for when he committed these new offenses.

First Assistant Boone County Attorney, Matt Speers, prosecuted the cases on behalf of the State of Iowa for the prosecution. Bradley Allen was defended by a local attorney. The Boone County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case with assistance from the Iowa State Patrol, Story County Sheriff’s Office, and Ames PD.
