
The Boone boys’ tennis team is headed back to the state tournament once again, securing a 5-0 semifinal win over Atlantic before edging Ballard 5-4 in substate play Wednesday, May 21, at McHose Park in Boone.
Boone 5, Atlantic 0
In the substate semifinal against Atlantic, Boone made quick work of the Trojans, sweeping the match 5-0.
The doubles teams played first, and all three Boone teams earned convincing wins.
No. 1 Strummer Grout and Calvin Jordan won 6-2, 6-0, No. 2 Braxtan Sproule and Patrick Houser were victories 6-0, 6-1, and No. 3 Brandon Holm and Sam Chesnut won 6-1, 6-2.
In singles play, No. 4 Houser and No. 6 Logan Wickman both won 6-1, 6-0, to secure the team victory.
Boone 5, Ballard 4
In the substate final, Boone faced a stiffer test against Ballard, needing every point in a 5-4 victory to punch its ticket to state.
The doubles team of Sproule and Houser defeated Ballard’s duo 6-3, 6-0, to give Boone a 1-2 score after doubles.
In singles play, No. 2 Grout won in third set tiebreaker 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-3), and No. 3 Jordan also was victorious, 6-0, 6-4.
No. 4 Houser also won in third set tiebreaker 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4), and No. 6 Wickman won 6-1, 6-1 to close out the meet.
With the victory, Boone earns its 10th consecutive trip to the team state tournament.
The Toreadors will now head to Pella Tuesday and Wednesday, June 2 and 3, for the state tournament where they will compete against the top teams in Class 1A.
