Boone City Council Votes to Suspend Open Burning

KWBG 04/08/20

BOONE, Iowa—The Boone City Council voted Monday to suspended open burning in the community until further notice.  By ordinance, open burning of yard waste would have been permitted from April 15th to May 15th.  But, due to the coronavirus being a respiratory concern, it was argued that for many, open burning aggravates respiratory issues like asthma.  Boone City Council member Greg Piklapp asked that the matter be brought up and explained his concerns.  Council member BJ McGinn did raise the possibility of revisiting the suspension, in May.  Boone Mayor John Slight said on KWBG Tuesday that he fully expects council members to hear both positive and negative feed back on their decision because even though the ordinance dealing with open burning of yard waste has been in place for 20-years, it still generates a lot of reaction in the community.  The Council’s action does not affect recreational fires.
