The Boone girls’ swimming and diving team won the team championship Tuesday, September 1, at the Grinnell Invitational with 339 points.
Boone finished ahead of Grinnell High School (282 points), Oskaloosa High School (242), Williamsburg High School (111) and Centerville High School (12).
“It was good to have our full roster able to compete tonight. Everyone got four races each, so it was a very busy night,” head coach Chris Mann said.
The Toreadors were led by several individual event victories.
Avery Howie claimed the 200-yard freestyle title in 2:07.91 and later added another first-place finish in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:09.38.
Boone also dominated the distance freestyle race as Aleah Karolus won the 500 freestyle in 5:35.12, finishing more than 26 seconds ahead of the runner-up.
Karolus later added a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.07.
In the 100 backstroke, Claire Enabnit touched first in 1:07.36.
Makenzie Klatt was second and Enabnit third in the 200 freestyle, giving Boone a sweep of the top three spots in the event.
The Toreadors also had a strong showing in the 200 individual medley, where Quinn Houston finished second in 2:34.11, Houser was third in 2:38.40 and Lucy Enabnit placed fifth in 2:40.55.
“Just having this many athletes had made for a fun atmosphere, and there seems to always be someone in the water to cheer for,” Mann said. “We just hit 26 practices, so to see some of these girls get a change to get after it and compete after all of that was fun.”
Relay events also played a major role in Boone’s championship effort.
The Toreadors placed third in the 200 medley relay as the team of Morgan Cox, Karolus, Ashlyn Burkhart and Harper Houston finished in 2:06.64.
In the 200 freestyle relay, Boone took third and fourth place with its entries.
The squad of Ellie Hughes, Harper Houston, Sara Gute and Howie finished third in 1:49.15, while Claire Enabnit, Cox, Kilee Hughes and Karolus were fourth in 1:50.66.
Boone closed the meet with a runner-up finish in the 400 freestyle relay.
The team of Harper Houston, Burkhart, Gute and Howie finished second in 4:11.22, while another Toreador relay consisting of Houser, Klatt, Hughes and Cali Hernandez placed third in 4:12.28.
Boone scored valuable points in diving as well.
Amaya Filipiak earned third place with a score of 188.70, while teammate Chloey Williams finished fourth at 157.95.

“We also toyed with the lineup a bit and put some kids in events they may not typically swim and challenged them to just get up and compete – it doesn’t matter the race – just compete. And they did. I’m proud of that effort tonight,” Mann said.
The Toreadors are 9-1 overall and will host Algona at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 8.
