The Boone girls’ swimming and diving team finished second at the Bobcat Invite in Marshalltown Saturday, September 19.
Boone scored 314 points, trailing only Johnston, which captured the team championship with 360.
Marshalltown finished third with 222, followed by Grinnell with 125, Ottumwa with 97 and Atlantic with 84.
“Anytime you swim against Johnston, you know you’re up against it, so to be in the same realm as them on the team score felt pretty good in the end,” said head coach Chris Mann.
Boone was led by Aleah Karolus, who captured the Toreadors’ lone swimming victory of the meet.
Karolus won the 100-yard freestyle in 56.87 seconds, edging Marshalltown’s Leia Hernandez, who finished in 56.95.
Karolus also placed second in the 50 freestyle, finishing in 25.51 seconds, just .06 behind Hernandez’s winning time of 25.45.
Boone also picked up points in diving.
Amaya Filipiak finished second with 335.25 points, while teammate Chloey Williams was third with 312.60.
Marshalltown’s Harlie Thatcher won the competition with 420.55 points.
The Toreadors had several other runner-up performances.
Quinn Houston finished second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:06.95, while Avery Howie placed second in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.78.
Howie also took third in the 50 freestyle at 25.96.
Quinn Houston added a third-place finish in the 500 freestyle, swimming 5:53.80.
Morgan Cox was fourth in the same event at 6:03.60, while Lucy Enabnit finished sixth in 6:15.17.
Claire Enabnit placed fourth in the 100 butterfly in 1:09.45 and fifth in the 200 individual medley in 2:28.79.
Ellie Hughes took third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.01 and ninth in the 200 IM.
Klatt finished third in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.42.
Kilee Hughes contributed a pair of sixth-place finishes, swimming 2:12.91 in the 200 freestyle and 1:00.57 in the 100 freestyle.
Finley Houser was seventh in the 200 freestyle and eighth in the 100 butterfly, while Harper Houston finished seventh in the 200 IM and eighth in the 100 breaststroke.
The Toreadors’ 200 freestyle relay team of Sara Gute, Howie, Quinn Houston and Karolus finished second in 1:45.72, only two-hundredths of a second behind Johnston’s winning time of 1:45.70. [
In the 400 freestyle relay, Houston, Howie, Kilee Hughes and Karolus combined for another runner-up finish, posting a time of 3:55.11.
Johnston won in 3:50.33.
Boone opened the swimming portion of the meet with a third-place effort in the 200 medley relay.
Klatt, Ellie Hughes, Claire Enabnit and Gute finished in 2:02.38.

“This is somehow always the meet where we swim really tired and a bit slow.” Mann said.
“It’s just a tough time of the season, and throw Perry homecoming on top of that makes it even a bit harder.
“But credit to the girls, they still competed and there were several positives to take away from the meet.”
Boone’s overall record is 15-2, and the duel record is 2-0.
The Toreadors’ next meet is at the Des Moines Lincoln Invite Saturday, September 26.
