The Madrid football team stayed perfect on the season Friday, September 18, rolling past Earlham, 43-12, in Class A district football action on the road.
The Tigers improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in district play with the victory.
Madrid grabbed a 6-0 lead after the opening quarter before taking control of the game with 23 points in the second quarter.
The Tigers added seven points in both the third and fourth quarters to finish with 43 points.
Madrid did most of its damage on the ground, led by Will Atkinson, who carried 22 times for 130 yards and two touchdowns.
Quarterback Chase Perkins contributed both on the ground and through the air.
Perkins rushed nine times for 54 yards and two touchdowns while completing 3 of 5 passes for 85 yards.
Jevyn Severson added two rushing touchdowns, finishing with 27 yards on six carries, while Logan Bogardus ran three times for 22 yards.
Max Fowler was Madrid’s leading receiver with two catches for 71 yards, while Bogardus caught one pass for 14 yards.
Madrid’s defense also played a major role in the victory by forcing three interceptions.
Kole Deppe picked off two Earlham passes and returned them for seven yards, while Bogardus had an interception with a 35-yard return.
Emerson Bridgewater led the Tigers defensively with 10.5 tackles.
Max Fowler added 7.5 tackles, including a tackle for loss and a sack, while McCoy Cooley recorded seven tackles and one tackle for loss.
Quinton Moore finished with six tackles.
Kolbie Owens contributed on special teams, making one field goal and going 4-for-6 on extra-point attempts.
Madrid scored 37 points over the final three quarters after its six-point opening period, while holding Earlham to 12 points for the game.
The Tigers will step away from district competition this week when they travel to face Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center on Friday, September 25.
AC/GC also enters the matchup with a 4-0 record, setting up a battle of unbeaten teams.
