The Boone girls’ swimming and diving team’s depth was on display Tuesday, September 8, as the Toreadors rolled past Algona, 136-36, in a dual meet at Boone.
Boone won 11 of the 12 varsity swimming and diving events and swept several races on the way to the victory.
“The girls swam pretty well,” said head coach Chris Mann. “We’re getting into the middle chunk of the season here where some swims start to look a little tired due to the high volume and intensity at proactive, but they’re always tasked with competing.”
Boone opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay as Avery Howie, Ellie Hughes, Aleah Karolus, and Kilee Hughes touched first in 1 minute, 57.39 seconds.
Boone’s relay team of Ellie Hughes, Sara Gute, Lily Lucht, and Morgan Cox claimed the 200 freestyle relay in 1:54.16.
The meet concluded with another Boone victory in the 400 freestyle relay.
The foursome of Karolus, Howie, Quinn Houston, and Ellie Hughes posted a winning time of 3:50.16.
“I think we put up some good swims throughout the meet, but I was especially pleased with our 400 freestyle relay dropping a couple seconds in the last race of the night,” Mann said.
The Toreadors continued to pile up points in the individual events.
Harper Houston won the 200 freestyle in 2:16.71, narrowly edging teammate Lucy Enabnit by one-tenth of a second, while Lucht completed a Boone sweep of the top three places.
In the 200 individual medley, Karolus earned another first-place finish with a time of 2:19.40.
Teammates Morgan Cox and Ashlyn Burkhart placed second and fourth, respectively.
In the 50 freestyle, where Howie captured first in 25.68 seconds.
Quinn Houston added a third-place finish, and Mackenzie Klatt took fourth.
Karolus also won the 100 butterfly, touching the wall in 1:02.64.
Boone claimed three of the top four spots as Ellie Hughes was second and Kilee Hughes finished fourth.
Howie added another individual victory in the 100 freestyle with a winning time of 57.78.
Klatt placed second and Claire Enabnit was third, giving Boone a sweep of the top three positions.
Quinn Houston won the 500 freestyle in 5:48.85, followed by teammate Finley Houser in second and Harper Houston in third.
In the final individual swimming event, Kilee Hughes won the 100 backstroke in 1:11.23, while Lucy Enabnit placed third.
Algona’s lone varsity event victory came in the 100 breaststroke, and Boone had second-, third-, and fourth-place finishes from Claire Enabnit, Cox, and Anthea Law.
The Toreadors also got a victory from diver Chloey Williams, who posted a winning score of 155.20 on the one-meter board.
“It was a great night celebrating a few things at our first home swim meet,” Mann said. “We paid honor to the late coach Jean Dowd, who coached Perry swimming for 27 years and left quite a coaching legacy. She tragically and unexpectedly passed away this past May. Having her family in attendance meant a lot to our team and a lot of our girls who were coaches by her.”

Boone’s overall record is 10-1, and the dual record is 1-0.
“We also celebrated the official unveiling of our new videoboard,” Mann said. “It was great to thank the booster club and our main sponsors, Kruck and Enterprise Electric, for all their support, vision and drive getting that project completed. It makes our pool look really nice and is probably one of the top swim videoboards in the state.”
The Toreadors will host Des Moines East Thursday, September 8, for Swim Against Cancer Night.
