The Boone girls’ swimming team turned in a strong performance Saturday, September 26, winning the Lincoln Invite in Des Moines.
The Toreadors finished first in the six-team field with 543 points, well ahead of runner-up Carroll with 438.
Cedar Rapids Washington finished third with 329, followed by Des Moines Lincoln with 310, Indianola with 288 and Des Moines East with 175.
“There was a lot of energy on the deck today at Lincoln,” said head coach Chris Mann.
Boone opened the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay, as Avery Howie, Ellie Hughes, Aleah Karolus and Finley Houser combined for a winning time of 1:56.18.
The Toreadors also picked up several individual victories.
Claire Enabnit won the 200 individual medley in 2:28.01, while Karolus swept the sprint freestyle events, winning the 50 freestyle in 24.93 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 55.46.
Kilee Hughes captured the 500 freestyle in 5:48.17, edging Indianola’s Kaylee Dykstra by just two-tenths of a second.
Ellie Hughes added another Boone victory in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 1:14.86.
“We had a lot of great swims, including winning all three relays and 5 of 8 individual events,” Mann said.
Boone was also strong in the freestyle relays.
Sara Gute, Ellie Hughes, Kilee Hughes and Howie won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:47.59.
The Toreadors closed the meet with another victory as Quinn Houston, Kilee Hughes, Karolus and Harper Houston won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:55.25.
Boone finished the day with eight event victories, including five individual wins and three relay wins, on the way to the team championship.
“We scored 60 more points than last year, showing that our depth is improving,” Mann said.

The Toreadors return to the pool Tuesday, September 29, traveling to the Grinnell College Natatorium for a meet against Grinnell and Williamsburg.
