The Boone girls’ cross country team was represented by a pair of sophomores who both finished in the top third of the field at the Iowa High School Cross Country Championships on Saturday morning, October 31, at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course near Fort Dodge.
Whitney Chesnut led the way for the Toreadors, finishing 29th overall in a time of 19 minutes, 30.5 seconds.
Just four seconds behind her teammate, Briella Johnson crossed the finish line in 19:34.4 to place 33rd overall.
Chesnut’s and Johnson’s performances gave Boone two runners in the top third against a field of 100 of the state’s best Class 3A competitors.
Mount Vernon-Lisbon senior Evelyn Moeller captured the individual state championship in 17:07.5.
Pella won the team title with 24 points.
With two underclassmen competing among the state’s best and finishing just seconds apart, the Toreadors showcased both their current strength and the foundation for future success at the state meet.
