The Madrid boys’ cross country team wrapped up its season with an 11th-place finish at the Iowa High School Cross Country Championships on Friday morning, October 31, at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course near Fort Dodge.

Competing against the state’s best Class 1A programs, the Tigers scored 246 points.

Riverside of Oakland and Earlham tied for first place with 127 points, and the time of the teams’ sixth-place runners determined Riverside was the winner as James McCready of Riverside ran faster than Kruz Fagan of Earlham.

Ankeny Christian Academy was close behind in third with 129.

Madrid was led by senior Caleb Berberich, who crossed the finish line in 17 minutes, 26.9 seconds, placing 42nd overall and setting the pace for the Tigers.

Freshman Jacob Brandhorst wasn’t far behind, placing 45th in 17:32.6.

Sophomore Hudson White gave Madrid a third top-70 finish, taking 68th in 17:51.9, while junior Kris Petersen finished 73rd in 17:57.6 as four Tigers broke the 18-minute mark.

The Tigers had their top four runners finishing within just 31 seconds of one another.

Freshman Isaac Boes rounded out the scoring lineup, finishing 129th in 19:53.9.

Junior Aiden Titus and sophomore Sean Udelhoven added depth to the Madrid effort.

Both runners recorded personal-best performances on the state stage, with Titus placing 133rd in 20:02.7 and Udelhoven finishing 138th in 20:13.3.

The season concluded with Madrid earning a spot among the top Class 1A teams in Iowa and gaining valuable experience that should benefit the Tigers in the years ahead.
