Boone tennis falls to ranked opponents

The No. 7 Boone boys’ tennis team came up short in two duals against No. 6 Waverly-Shell Rock and No. 5 Decorah Thursday, April 23, at Wartburg College in Waverly.

The No. 7 Boone boys’ tennis team came up short in two duals against No. 6 Waverly-Shell Rock and No. 5 Decorah Thursday, April 23, at Wartburg College in Waverly. 

Waverly-Shell Rock 5, Boone 4 

Boone fell to Waverly‑Shell Rock, 5–4, in a closely contested dual. 

Boone earned three singles victories from Strummer Grout, Brandon Holm and Logan Wickman.  

Grout prevailed at the No. 2 position with a 10–4 victory, while Holm earned a 10–6 win at No. 5 singles and Wickman edged his opponent 10–8 at No. 6. 

The Toreadors picked up their fourth point in doubles when Holm and Sam Chesnut secured a 10–8 win at No. 3 doubles.  

Decorah 6, Boone 3 

Later in the day, Boone matched up with Decorah, falling 6–3 in another competitive dual. 

Boone’s singles points came from Patrick Houser, who won 10–8 at No. 4 singles, and Wickman, who picked up a 10–5 victory at the No. 6 spot.  

The Toreadors added a third point in doubles as Holm and Chesnut stayed hot, winning in third set tiebreaker 11–10 (7–2) at No. 3 doubles.

Boone (5-2) will travel to Fort Dodge Monday for a triangular with Nevada (6-0) and Fort Dodge (2-4).
