City Moves Ahead With I & I Program

KWBG 02/05/19

BOONE, Iowa—After several years of seeking voluntary compliance from residents to remove sump pumps from sanitary sewer lines, the Boone City Council has taken steps to mandate a program and it will involve inspections of sump pumps and where they discharge water.  Last year, the Council amended their ordinance that permitted the discharge of sump pumps into sanitary sewer lines during winter months.  City code now prohibits the discharge of sump pumps in sanitary sewer lines at any time.  The action was a first step in dealing with an issue that has not been getting better.

Angie Kolz, P.E. with WHKS Engineering, specializes in water and waste water practices presented information to the City Council and members of the public that attended a public meeting at the city hall auditorium Monday.  The meeting was just one step in the process that will continue, eventually with the inspection sump pumps in a targeted area on the west side of Boone.  City officials say the inspection program will eventually cover the entire city.

Boone Mayor John Slight did talk about the program on the KWBG News and Public Affairs Program Tuned In Monday.
