Coaches Corner for April 30th: Ollie Johnston, Boone Girls Soccer

KWBG 04/30/26

Transcript

With us on Coaches Corner on KWBG, we're going to talk some Boon Girl soccer today, as Ollie Johnston joining us in the Torridors came up with a really nice victory over Carroll on Tuesday night. And it's funny because you get a 3-0 win and you feel great, although I know Ollie, you walked away with maybe hoping for maybe some more goals just with shot opportunities. But let's start on the real positive side. Real nice to get back on the winning track. Yeah. And like I said to you off, I think that's it. We're on the right track moving forward, ready for next week, in particular, we've got our senior night next Tuesday. And obviously, we want to get a win when it's senior night for our seniors. Well, tell me about how the Carroll match went, because I know Ollie said, boy, you guys spent a lot of time on their side, which is what you want to do. You want opportunities to score. How did the match kind of take place? Yeah, so I think in the first half, we had maybe the ball, I want to say, like 85% of the time in Carroll's half. And we were attacking, attacking, attacking, but we only were 1-0 off at half time through an Anna Thomas goal. But it was still a problem because we just could not really get the ball into the box and then take the shot in the box. And I spoke to the girls at half time, and then we kind of opted the tempo. We started being a little bit more creative. And then in the second half, I mean, pretty much the whole half, we spent in their final third. So I wouldn't even say the Carroll half, I would say, around the goal box. But we just could not score. And that's given us things to work on in practice this week. But it has been kind of the story so far in our season. I mean, we scored four goals against Carl Isle for our first game of the season. Then we scored the 40-yard free kick with Delaney against Ballard, but we have not scored in, well, that was four games with no goals. And that's not good, no matter who our opponents are. And that kind of led to, I mean, I believe our tie against Perry that we probably should have won, but we just could not get any good shots on target. We hit the post once. Otherwise, it was just weaker shots at the goalkeeper. So that was kind of the story last night. We did score three. Well, we scored two, and Carroll scored an own goal. But that's it right now. We need to do a better job at being clinical in front of goal and the score. Well, I tell you what, the positive part, though, is just being in their half for as long as you were. I know Ali kind of frustration with just not maybe getting the goals. But boy, offensively, they're not really having opportunities to score, are they? Yeah, yeah, and that's it. I mean, the defense has done well this season. I mean, we've gone against some big teams, North Polk, Gilbert, Bangeran, and defensively, we've done well. I mean, also, I want to remind you that in years past, we've been ten owed by these teams. Right. So defensively, we are looking good. And if we fix the defensive side, then now it's just going to be about scoring as we move into the second half of the season. But I mean, yeah, I think we've made a couple of saves in the game, maybe. But yeah, I mean, it was good that our midfielder winning the ball. I'm able to get the ball forward. But I mean, on a different night, maybe we're winning 10-0. And that would be a lot more reflective of how the game went. Ali, so, and I know if you knew the 100% answer, you would do this. But what do you do at practice now? Because I know we're off a little bit. And we have, we'll go to Nevada next week. And Winnerset's going to be on the schedule as well for senior night. But what do you do in practice to get some better offensive strategy, maybe some better passing? Give me a couple of things you'd like to work on now, because you do have a little bit of time before that next match. Yeah, and we have a good opportunity now to kind of sit back and take a look at the bigger picture on how we've got on. But I mean, the first thing that we're going to do today, it's going to be separating the defense and the attackers. The defense are going to be doing their own kind of activities. And then I'm going to be taking the attackers and we're going to be looking at shooting and looking at technique and figuring out how we can shoot outside of the box and get power behind our shots more consistently. And if we can show progress in that today, then tomorrow we'll look at kind of the bigger picture of attacking in the final third, which is not just shooting. It will be kind of the building out wide with crosses in and running into the ball and trying to volley it and more things like that. But for now, we're just going to go back to the fundamentals of shooting and just work on our technique of actually shooting the ball, getting some power behind it. Senior night as you talked about is going to be coming up, coach. And I know that's always an important night, not just for the seniors and their parents, but I know that's important for the rest of the team and also coach as well. Yeah, senior night since I've been at Boone has been a very enjoyable time. And we performed well. And it's nice to get the seniors involved who maybe have been JV players the last few years. I mean, we've got Cadence who is kind of in between the JV and the Varsity group. We've got Beth who's been with the program this third year and she's one of the JV captains. And we can't wait to give her an opportunity in the Varsity game. And Nevea joined us this year. This is our first year playing soccer. But as a senior, we want her to get those varsity minutes and enjoy senior nights. So it's down to the whole squad to make sure that we give them a memorable senior night and we get the win. Ollie, as always, thank you so much for some time. Best of luck as you get ready for next week. And we'll talk to you again here real soon. Awesome. Thank you so much. You bet. Ollie Johnston again joining us. Boone Girls Soccer here on Coach's Corner.
