Coaches Corner for August 26th: Hannah Vial, Madrid Volleyball

With us on coaches corner KWBG going to talk some madrid volleyball head coach Hannah vile joining us the Tigers with a real nice victory last night first off I get always nice to get that first conference win But you do it at home and that always feels good too and Hannah first time you guys have knocked off west central valley since 2021 that had to feel pretty darn good walking out of the gym last night Yeah, I mean it was an awesome feeling I think just the feeling of the big crowd the student section All three teams winning and doing well Just awesome the girls are really happy Hannah let's talk offseason because this is something you and I talked about I remember at the end of last season and it was I don't want you know as soon as the volleyball's get put away I don't want them not to touch a volleyball until I see them again In august, uh, I want to know offseason girls get some touches in Oh, yeah, so I had a few high school girls go and play club In places and then I coached the eighth grade club in the winter So the girls coming up to be freshmen So it was awesome to kind of get them going with our system before They got into high school and then we spent a lot of time in the gym this summer and at different camps What did you see the most improvement wise Hannah besides the girls? Obviously getting some more extra time in and you know not leaving the volleyball away until august I think the understanding of the game Um, reading it knowing it and then just the mental side of it being able to push through errors. Um Go for the bigger plays even if it's a mistake and just being a team Got a real nice senior class this year and it's a class that I remember We talked about when they were sophomores and just coming up because we knew how important they were going to be with Page and obviously jayla and isla obviously a big part benton in there too and and hadley and uh, Snyder too Tell me about what are these group? What was this group looked like so far coach? How's the leadership and are they kind of owning this team and kind of showing you what they want to be? Yeah, I mean, I have a really great group of seniors. Um, I love their personalities They bring a lot of fun into the gym and competitiveness and they have a lot of experience A lot of them have been playing since they were freshmen Or sophomores on the varsity court. So it's nice having that experience Um for the younger classmen too Well, we've got some juniors too. Don't don't get me wrong. I know I just gave the glowing Praise for the seniors, but we got a junior class too, Hannah that they've been important to you I mean they've had to step in in place and some of them have been freshmen They've kind of stepped into a role too. We're like, you know, listen, we'd understand your juniors, but they're really seasoned Oh, yeah, uh, lots of juniors lots of experience there too. So Just another great group of girls that love volleyball. Um, their competitive They go hard every day in the gym and just Off them on and off the court Well, and hannah, you had something else happen. You told me off air that happened last night and it was Got down by six points at one time and in the past we've had we've had some troubles when we got down, you know six seven eight nine points or so just trying to Claw our way back in and hey six points. We can pick that up pretty quick You guys got down six and immediately got her tied right back up Yeah, serving was big last night too. So I think that helped but I was just super impressed with the mentalities And the the not giving up and the fighting through those times and pushing through the long rallies and finding ways to win those Hannah something else you just mentioned and I feel like we've talked about this for for a long time And maybe it's just because I think most volleyball coaches talk about it Serve receive it seems like I know we want to get the ball over the net and that always feels good to get an ace serve But man, if we can't receive it, we're in big trouble. Tell me about serve receive last night I know that's been something that you have been Talking with me about quite a few actually I think since you took over the job You said this and we got to be able to receive the serves better. How do we look last night? I thought it was great. Um, we have a lot of really solid serve receive pastors that can move and cover the floor Um, I thought it was great. I say like if you can't pass it's going to be hard to do anything else So I was pretty impressed Good on that Well, you guys have had an opportunity to to have quite a few scrimmages to get things started off with the west central activities Conference scrimmage, and I know there's been some others in there as well. Give me some give me some spots We're still improving in Hannah. What are some things we need to get better at? Uh, I would like to work on serving I'm just being a little bit more aggressive and thinking about where we are serving to we serve to the There libero quite a lot last night. So we're working to get the other team out of system And then just connections with hitters Ryland's running a five one this year. So just working with her to You know try different things and being offensive like she was last night Well something new to the west central activities conference Hannah. I got a feeling I know your opinion on this But I'll ask you anyway not to get you into trouble We've got we've gone away from the from the one-on-ones this year. We got a lot of triangulars coming up What are your thoughts on on a lot of these uh west central activities conference matches? Being triangulars this fall I think there's pros and cons to it Um, you know the pros being you get to see more teams you get to play more games But the only bad thing would be you know when you get five sets you get more of an opportunity To crawl back if the game doesn't go your way right away But it does emphasize like hey, we got to get out right away. We got to play through and play our game All right, tell me what's coming up. We got uh looks like west marshal Here next week and then colfax mingo ac gc Going to be busy in the gym hand an opportunity though to kind of watch what you did last night in the wind That's got to be exciting too to watch a win and know okay. This is what we did that worked. Let's do this again Yeah, I think it was a great start to get one under our belt and kind of know that feeling Especially as we start to have a more heavy away schedule Playing in other gyms, you know, that brings different Challenges so just being ready for that.
