Coaches Corner for June 15th: Charlie Eastlund, Boone Baseball

KWBG 06/15/26

Transcript

with us on coaches corner KWB G get a chance to talk some boon baseball. Charlie Eastland joining us. Big week for the Torridors and a busy week for the Torridors as well. And we'll talk about that here in just a few. Obviously, want to go back to last week and kind of look back at the week that was. And Charlie was actually a pretty good week. When you look back, you had a real nice victory against Carlisle in game two of a double header. I know Bondurant Fraar is one that probably disappointment. I'm real excited to see, though, in the return visit, because I think that'll be a heck of a ball game. But overall, from last week, what'd you think? Yeah, going to Carlisle for a double to come out of there with the split was important for us. So that's a place that we haven't won a ton of baseball games. And goodness, what is this? Like, 14th year for me, anyways. And it's always been tough to go there and win. And they were a rank number four last week when we played them and to come out of there with a winning game, too. And a solid win in game two was really important for our team moving forward. And just, I think, some confidence. Hey, look, we're also a good team as well. We just haven't played as many games as everyone else. And tough to get in a rhythm when you're not playing as much as you should be. Well, I thought the big thing, too, was you guys actually just had a scheduled Friday night off where you weren't going to have a game last Friday. And Charlie, now that we kind of look ahead to what's coming up this week, maybe that wasn't a bad thing. Yeah, well, we were able to get in a good practice. And we're rested up for sure. And so coming into a big week here, yeah. Maybe it wasn't a bad thing. So time will tell. And we'll find out here this week. I know we've talked about this before. And I know it's a collective thing when it talks about the coaching staff on how you're going to work this week. I know it'd be easy for me to say, OK, what would you do if this happened? What would you do if this happened? But I guess that all kind of depends on game one against Gilberts. And I know what the week looks like. Doesn't it a little bit? Yeah, it really does. You can try to plan and play out scenarios and things like that. And run guys on pitch counts. But we want to go out and be really competitive and just show, hey, we're trying to get to right now here tonight. And it starts with game one. And so we'll let tonight dictate the way the rest of the week plays out as far as how we handle pitching matchups. Let's talk about the squad a little bit, Charlie, because one kid I really wanted to talk about right out of the chute was Levi Bain. And just having a fantastic senior season. And I know he really dedicated himself in the off season to this his last year for Boone Baseball. Tell me about Levi and what you've seen so far this summer. I'm thrilled for him. Like, awesome kid and works extremely hard, all the things that you just said. Like, for him to be able to reap the benefits that hard work and go out and produce means a lot to me. And I'm just thrilled for him for that. So he's put in a lot of time. And we have a player-parent meeting every year in March. And we talk about how we've got guys who have really stuck it out JV-wise. They've had to play JV as a sophomore and as a junior. And really, that was Levi's role. He had a few ABs last year varsity-wise and did some courtesy running. But that was the majority of his high school baseball experience so far, but stayed with it, continued to press on work hard. And here he is as a massive impact player in the varsity lineup here as a senior. And we've seen that year in, year out with our guys. And so it's just awesome to have another fresh example of a senior who has played JV as a sophomore and a junior. And now here they are being a massive impact player for us as a senior. Well, not a ton of that bats for this next kid I want to talk to, but I wanted to start from the senior and work my way back to a freshman. And I know you kind of talked about him a little bit off air with me, but how about Noah Gorman this year? Maybe limited at bats when you look at what he's been able to get to the plate. Although, let's be honest, we've only had 10 games, so not everybody has a ton of bats anyway. But he's also gotten some time on the mound as well for you. Future looks really nice for this young man. Yeah, definitely. He's shown up for us and it's pretty obvious that he belongs in our lineup. And yeah, thrilled for him as well. He offers a ton on the mound. Like he said, just haven't played enough games here. He really should have a couple of starts under his belt at this rate this season. But we're missing five games from the schedule right now. So we're sitting here at 10 games instead of 15. But we should see him start at some point here this week on the mound for us and continue to be a bat in our order here throughout this week. And he's been competitive there. Put really good swings on the baseball. And yeah, happy with his performance here at JV and Bar City levels for us. Well, I'll tell you what. You guys and Gilbert always seem like have had some, well, I shouldn't say always. It just feels like this has been the way since they joined the Raccoon River Conference. This is about as tight of a series as I've seen you guys have. Bonderant Farr might be another one that's been a pretty tight series. Charlie, what are you expecting here tonight in this doubleheader? Going to be good baseball, right? I mean, it should be. Gilbert won five games last week and beat some good teams. They had a win over Pella last week. And so they want this one just like we do here tonight and should be really competitive, fun baseball to watch for anyone that wants to come out and watch it. And we hope to play well and do well. If we do those things, we should be happy at there tonight. Obviously not looking past this doubleheader here tonight, but Charlie, you're going to do something unique tomorrow when you take on Winnerset. You guys will be at the Field of Dreams site. Can you tell us a little bit about how that kind of transpired and the excitement, I guess, that the kids have for tomorrow? Yeah. In the off-season, I don't know if it was in November, December, something like that. Winnerset's coach reached out and they had someone drop out of a date for them to play at the Field of Dreams, a non-con game for them, and asked if we would be willing to do it for their home game. And I thought, yeah, that'd be great. So we don't have to travel to Winnerset. We'll go to Field of Dreams instead, which is further away. But still, I've never been as a kid that grew up loving baseball. Obviously, I've watched the movie multiple times. But I've never been to the movie site or seen it or anything like that. And I know our players and their families are pretty excited to go do it. To be honest, when I first said yes to this, I actually thought we're going to play on the Big Wig Diamond, in which I was even more excited about. But we are actually going to be playing at the movie site field. So I know they've hosted a lot of games here the past couple of years at the movie site. And should be a pretty unique thing and a really fun experience for our guys to go go there and be there. Charlie's always thank you so much for some time. Best of luck with the busy week. And we'll talk to you again next Monday. All right, thanks, Ryan. You bet. Charlie Easton again joining us. Boone Baseball here on Coaches Corner.
