With us on coaches corner and KWBG and a talk some Adler boys track is a Steve Perkins joining us head coach. The Tigers had a chance to, oh, kind of get a little bit of a practice slash. Let's get some of the other kids opportunities. Let's let's check out some other things on Monday at ACGC. Steve, I don't want to call it a practice because I know you ran some of your events like you may run on Thursday. What would you call Mondays meet? I guess at ACGC.
We'd like to look at it as it's kind of like last chance to sharpen up and stay crisp and work on the little details that you need to work on heading into Thursday. Another opportunity maybe for some guys that might not be running on on on Thursday to qualify meets an opportunity for them to get one last good run in and for the season and to see what they can do and kind of finish up their season and but for the kind of varsity guys, the guy they'll get to qualify meet. We look at maybe just everybody running in one to two events and not wearing them down and trying to make sure they feel good about where they're at on going into Thursday and feeling especially possibly can and ready to compete and get loaded up and in their events of what they're going to do and be ready to kind of lose on Thursday. Well, a couple of things that I know you were pretty happy about on Monday night. Shuttle hurdle another really nice time. It's going to be exciting. I think to watch them coming up on Thursday four by eight. I know we talked about Jevin in the throws. He's had such a fantastic sophomore season four by one as well. I thought a pretty nice time to Steve you had a lot of positives that came out of Monday. Oh, yeah, a lot of good things and you know, even some of those younger guys running and competing kind of see what they like to do for one last time. Please with them as well. Yeah, you know, four by eight as we ran kids did a nice job kind of hitting their targets and just had a good race there. Please with the progression that they're making just of course the year. Shuttle hurdle same with the four by eight, you know, just all year long. They've been you know, real, real good about just kind of growing, I would say just working every day taking care of their craft and technique in the hurdles, you know, four by eight, taking care of their workouts of what they need to do and just keep getting better. And that's all anybody could ask of them and we're pleased and excited to see what they can do this Thursday night. You know, four by one had a little change around there with losing Jake Carroll. But we're looking forward to just moving forward and getting the relay six down and is a continuity going there. So Steve, when you found out the destination for state qualifying meet, do you immediately go to bound? Do you start, you know, checking results? What do you do or is this kind of more about what matter it's going to do and then everybody else kind of worry about themselves? Shall we say for Thursday? Yeah, I think I think going to go both ways. Of course, you look at what other people are doing, you know, kind of what their times are. But ultimately at the end of the day, I think you got to be most concerned about your, your team, your guys. What are you going to do? What is going to be and give you and your team the best chance to get events down and stay track me? And I think you do that first and then worry about yourself first on what you're going to do. And then from there, kind of piece together the rest of the lineup, of course, you're going to look around. I think every coach probably does that, looks around and see what other people got and what they're doing. But at the end of the day, I think you got to be most concerned about making sure that you're at the top of your game. You're in the top of your techniques and what you want to get done and training and making sure you put the kids in the best position for them to have success. And at the end of the day, so I can ask, is there best and the rest falls into place. Steve, will you get together with staff? How do you guys kind of decide what you want to do for state qualifying meet? Do you have a pretty good feel already even before Monday, you know, took place? Take me through this because obviously this is not your first rodeo. You've done this for a few years, but give us kind of your process. How do you get ready and what do you think and how do you kind of piece together what's going to happen on Thursday night? Yeah, I think every year is a different situation. Every team is going to be a little bit different for kind of what you're really good at and what you think you can do and what you know you can do. So you're sitting there going, I think it's very first thing to see. You take a look at kind of like where you feel, you know, you can best get events down and say track me. That's the very first thing you build off of, you know, and then from there, I think you piece it around what can give every kid then from now on out and the rest of your team to give them an opportunity to get down to track me the next best. And then after that, you're worried about the team scores and trying to win as they qualify in the championship. So we kind of go down from there and you kind of take everything that people and the kids have done. So of course, the year I'm seeing where they fit in the best and into the lineup and then while we say, I know it's probably what do you want to say kind of a cliche or whatever like every coach says, but it really is true. Especially when you're racing, you know, if somebody else wins the race, you're still running for time and every second matters. Every game matters because at the end of the day, obviously the places matter and the points matter for the state qualifying title, but then you have the opportunity to get in at large. If you don't win a race, you know, the next 14 best times or throws or jumps, getting into the state track me. So you always want to be finishing strong with whatever it is you're doing because you just never know what the cut offs are going to be and how where the times are going to end up for getting in the state track me. So, you know, it's kind of a process we kind of go through and I think probably it's pretty similar to what most coaches are probably going to go through trying to figure out what they're going to do with their team and then at the end of the day, like I said before, you know, you just the kids put your best foot forward and that's all we can ask of you. And in the day, you know, I think you can live with whatever the results are as long as you're giving them an opportunity and they're giving their best. Well, and Steve, you've had many meets in the past where you've had a very strong state qualifying meet and all of a sudden you get a bunch of qualifiers out of there. So I love when you say that, hey, you may not finish first, but you may be shocked. We may take a couple from your heat. You may take a couple from your event. I mean, you just never know how good your your state qualifying meet is. Yeah, yeah, absolutely. And, you know, sometimes you can get caught up in that. Well, I think when you're looking at your staff and things at the state qualifying meet because sometimes they know kids are running, you know, eight different events and they're you know, a lot of people, they can't run eight events at the state qualifying meet. So they come around four. So all of a sudden you start kicking those things out and you don't know where everybody's going to use certain individuals. So that's why I think primary focus has got to be on what you think and your team and your coaches and your kids think that you could be best at. And you have a staff which puts time in and do what you feel is best. And that's all you can do is do what you feel is best and you're going to give your team the best chances. So that's what you got to do. Steve, as always, thank you so much for some time. Best of luck with preparation and best of luck as well on Thursday night. Oh, thank you. You bet. Steve Perkins again joining us. Matt Rebois-Track here on Coaches Corner.
