KWBG 05/21/26

Transcript

with us on coaches corner KWB G gonna talk some boom girl soccer today as Ali Johnston joining us the Torridors get a really nice victory on Tuesday night is able to knock off Des Moines East five to two and we'll get to that one here in just a second coach you had the the Invitational over the weekend you had a chance to get one win over Central Iowa United and then lost to Kemper Catholic I know kind of a tale of two different matches but how'd you feel after the weekend yeah I think that we did we did a lot of things right against Central Iowa United I was able to get a lot of rotation in and and kind of rest players as needed and give other players an opportunity to play which is nice and then what we do in there when it is our invite is we kind of have like a lunch like pop luck in between the games and that's a really nice like social time for the girls to kind of connect and like a bond just just as a team and I know that they eat they chat I mean they're probably on my phones and then they end up placing games for like I say socialize so that so that was good and and Kemper Catholic they had yeah they had they had a few early goals in the game in the first half we did a lot better in the second half I think the final score of the second half was 0-0 right and we were a lot more competitive than that but Kemper Catholic a very good team and their rank this this season we weren't able to break them down completely but again in the second half we changed some things at half time and that definitely made us more competitive than a much more closer game well and it seemed like it worked out because you come back against Des Moines the team that had knocked you off last year three to one coach and you get a five to two victory and gosh there's so many positives we can take away from Tuesday night I'll let you get into a few of them Ali because you were telling me a bunch of stuff that we look back on and go okay we scored from the corner we hadn't got that done goalkeeping I thought was pretty good we got shots on goal they were good passing I mean Ali there's a lot of stuff that was very positive from Tuesday night which you want because post-seasons next week yeah and it's good that I mean as I said to the girls before the game and I mean I said the same thing at the weekend like we're at the stage of the season now where I need them to do everything that I've told them and like when we had that first game against Carlo it was it was right this is what we've worked on it's what we've liked it's what we need to do and then after that it's well the feedback was this after we lose another game it's we do this after we tie another game you do this and then it's reaching that point at the end of the season where it's like right like this should be kind of this is the finished product so we need to be performing meaning to do these things because that is going to go towards our last remaining two regular season games and then our substrate like you say is next Thursday how do you like that well I think the one thing also I wanted to take away from the Des Moines East match from from Tuesday night coaches just the the improvement in not just the passing not just opportunities what listen if we get a shot on goal let's make it a good shot on goal let's not just be out there kicking toward the goal and let them have a free grab and then away we go you got a bunch of those I mean it was 3-0 after the first half coach you got out and really got after it early which I know is something you've wanted to see these girls you wanted to see more attack and more have had this happen earlier and not later in matches yeah and I think that has been that has been games where my feedback at the end has been we've done a lot better in the second half right but but we need to do it over both parts and last night we we were so good and in the first half it was it was one of the best performances I've seen our boon girls do I mean since I joined the program it was it we had some really good passing moments we had some really good pressure and we we played with intensity we were we were doing a lot of things right and like you mentioned earlier we spoke about off air but it's the first time we've scored from a corner right all season in fact we scored from three corners so so it's good that all of these things are coming together and that really helps us but the the first half performance last night was very very good and then and then in the second half we still did a good job it wasn't as I say that one of the best but it we still did a good job in the second half and that's why that's why the scores is finished with us in favor. Ollie you get a chance to play your postseason opponent seven days before you play them so I'll ask you the question I always ask my coaches do you like playing a team that you're gonna play already and you know in tournaments the next week does it matter you still have to execute I understand all of that but give me your thoughts Ollie you play Newton coming up on the 21st and then heck you got to play him again on the 28th yeah it's it's a weird situation it's I don't know I like that the pro of it is that we get to see we get to see Newton a week before the sub state yeah the the negative of it is I mean you can get to see us so I don't really know I haven't been in this situation before and I'm a little bit surprised with people kind of hand-picking the postseason that I mean they they didn't look at it and say oh Newton and Boone still need to play on the 21st so maybe let's not have them playing against each other so yeah I don't I don't really know how I feel I do know that I'm gonna be I'm gonna be very different as a coach when I play them on the 21st because one of the things that I'm gonna do is I'm gonna be watching what Newton do and I'm gonna be making lots of notes and that's gonna help me kind of predict what they're gonna be doing in our sub state game obviously they can do the same with us but it's yeah this is a new situation that I've been and I've never been in that one before you do have a chance to do something that I know you're not a huge fan of Ali and that's play double headers which you always call more than one match in in a week and so I know Denison will get a chance to to come to Boone hopefully not Boone's last home match but at least we know it's their last home regular season match it'll be nice I think coach to let let some people come out and see you guys play at least one last time at home because I think this group has really improved from the beginning of the season when we were talking and and who knew what you know you get that win against Carlisle then North Pole kind of you know being North Pole they're you know very good and they drop you eight to zero then a couple of ties in there but I think what'll be fun all you know where I'm making with the point here is that I like to see a lot of people come out on the 22nd and just get a chance to watch these ladies yeah I'm hopeful that we do get a lot of people come we we do normally have well since I've been here the substrate game has normally been at home right time so this will be that the fast line I've actually been away for the substrate game but yeah this will be our last home game of the season we're kicking off early over kicking off at 5 30 Denison requested a couple of things because they have a smaller squad and they pick up some injuries and I know that when I requested from other schools if we can kick off earlier when we have lower numbers I think Denison were one of the one of the teams that did that did kind of cooperate and say yeah that's fine but we can go earlier so yeah I just I want finish positively against Denison I mean it's that one singular game between the Newton games it's just a shame that it's the doubleheader which yeah you know my feelings on them it's hard because we're going to be given our all against Newton the night before and then and then we don't know what the score of that will be but if we're fighting until the end and we're given a hundred percent and then we'd like that in the next day the girls are not going to be fully recovered so that is kind of the disadvantage but yeah I mean we'll we'll take it this is the end of the season when I need the girls should be at that basis and we'll have to see how we get on all these always thank you so much for some time congrats on a real nice win on Tuesday night and we'll talk to you again here real soon awesome thank you on you bet Ollie Johnston and joining us boom girl soccer here on coaches corner
