Coaches Corner for May 28th: Bill Castle, Boone Girls Track

KWBG 05/28/26

Transcript

joining us on coaches corner, KWBG, get a chance to wrap up Boone Girls track season as Bill Castle joining us, the Torridors with representation again at the State Meet. We're able to get some points down at State, which I think Bill always kind of feels really nice and Jennifer and Malia had such a great throwing season. I don't think it shocked anybody, but you never quite know when you get to State and then you see a fourth and a fifth place finished coach. Man, that's a great end of the season. Yeah, it really was. It was nice to see their success and they really improved over the course of the year. Got to give a lot of credit to those two girls and then also to both Nate, Nate Myers and Nate Lumley, the throwing coaches. I really took them to another level this year. So the best thing about this is that they both come back next year. Malia will be a senior and Jen will be a junior. Looking forward to their continued improvement and maybe they can get a little bit higher next year. That would be awesome to see. Well, it was just fun watching them break each other's records this year. I mean, Bill, that was a shot put record that had hung around for a few years and all of a sudden it was just back and forth. It felt like every couple of weeks they were breaking each other's records. Yeah, it was. It's good to have that competition amongst that in that event. And yeah, they went back and forth a couple of times and Jen has put it out there a little bit with her 43 foot five and a quarter effort. So I'd like to see them continue to push that and continue to push each other too to see if they can even get that record to be a little bit further. Bill, what was that like this past season to have throwers? Not just that, you know, with obviously we're talking about their shot put at stake, but they also scored quite a few times when it came to the discus. But what is that like, Coach, when you haven't even put the 3000 meter runner out on the track yet and you've already scored some pretty good points from your field of enters. Yeah, it's a luxury to be honest. And it's nice to have counting, you know, probably 18 points in the shot for sure. And then in the disc, you know, we get a few points here and there, probably five to six out of that. So it's really good to have that in the bank before we get started on the track. Well, let's talk a little bit about the season. Now, coaches, we have a chance to kind of look back and reflect a little bit. And I know that the goal is always, you know, first off, let's get some meets in. I feel like Mother Nature sometimes isn't our best friend when it comes to that. But I know the goal in all seriousness is let's see how many events we can get to state, how many individuals we can get to state. I felt like one, you guys had one of the more difficult state qualifying meets because two, I was looking at times when it came to your relays and individuals, you guys had a ton of PRs that night. Yeah, we did. We had season best that night and that's really good considering that the weather wasn't the best in the wind but shuttle hurdle had a, had a best time. Four by one had a best time or four by four as well. Whitney Chestnut in the 1500. And then, you know, we got Briella Johnson to qualify in the open 400. So it was a tough meet obviously when you get Gilbert North Polk as the top two teams in that, in that state qualifying meet. But it was really good to see. We also had a, had a season best in the long jump with Taylor Arringdale as a senior. So it was nice to see her to go out on that with also a PR. So satisfied a little bit with, you know, some of the progress that we made in getting season best performances in those events, looking forward really to improving on those next year, because I think we can, we can really make some, some headway in some of those events, shuttle hurdle, for example, looking forward to continuing improvement on that. I'll be about the best shuttle hurdle. This was the best shuttle hurdle we've had in a long time. And those kids did a really great job. And then even in the 100 hurdles, Cara Darby's just continuing to improve. So it's good to see that as well. Well, and I think another group that I know it's maybe not the most fun event to run, but I really like to strides. Your four by eight took this year as well, coach. Yeah, yeah, four by eight really made big strides this year. We were really in a position we thought that could have potentially qualified. And an injury here and there kind of maybe prevented that. And Quinn Houston did a really great job of improving this year as well in that event. Or, you know, in her 800s to fill in when, when Finley Hauser had a, had an injury, but that's going to be another event that we're looking forward to next year as well as maybe the distance medley too. I think we can put something together there for next year. Well, I know this year's eighth grade team had really nice numbers as well, coach. You had some really nice numbers varsity wise. I feel like what's going to be graduating and then what's coming up. I don't feel like it. And obviously we'll lose some talent here and there. And it always takes, you know, it's a little bit of time to get going as a freshman. But I got to be honest with you, Bill. I feel like the numbers right now for Boone Girls Track are definitely on the uptick. Yeah, I think they are as well. We had over 40 kids out and that's, that's an improvement. And the most that we've had since I've been the coach. So, you know, we lose eight seniors, I believe. And then we'll be having some of those eighth graders come in and I think some of them can fill in pretty well. So looking forward to what we can do next year. When it comes to off season work, Bill, it always feels like Track maybe gets the, gets the off season time that they should. But I'm starting to see more names that are getting out there when it comes to Summer Iowa games and just different. Obviously with the running club, I know that that's been big for you guys in town. Bill, it kind of feels like Track's maybe getting a little bit more love than they've maybe even gotten in the last five years. Yeah, we hope so. We do have some kids that want to sign up and compete at the Iowa games. A lot of our running club kids, I think they're going to do that one as well. So I think just starting them a little bit at the youth level, I will always help that and give them some confidence, you know, when they get into middle school and then hopefully into high school, they can carry that over. So looking forward to continued improvements on those and the participation increase as well. Well, last one for me, Bill, I think I already know the answer to it, but I always like to say, you know, what was the like, what was the season like for you as a whole? Did we take a step forward this year, Bill? Where did you think the program was or is right now as we look ahead to 2027? Yeah, from a depth perspective and being able to have the numbers to fill those events that in the past we may not have been able to fill, you know, like the four by eight, the shuttle hurdle, some of those 3,000, you know, we took some big steps this year in that regard and being able to put a full team together, put a full team out there on the track and in the field is going to, I think, continue for us and continue to pay dividends. So looking forward to the future, I think it's bright. We just need to keep working and continuing to get better each day. Well, Bill, I want to thank you again for all the results, all the Coaches Corner's times as well. Thanks for a great spring and we'll look forward to talking again in 2027. Yeah, I appreciate it. Thank you, Ryan. Appreciate the support you give us. You bet. Bill Castle again joining us. Boom Girls Track here on Coaches Corner.
